I like these debates that the "public" thinks about athletics and its involvement in higher education (or education in general).

Sometimes, I could care less on how the kid earns his scholarship. I am not against giving a scholarship to someone "rich and famous" because the school is likely to benefit from MORE than what the scholarship involves.

They (the public) look at the money first and foremost. They don't look at how much money the administrators are making. They don't look at how much money some professors are making. They want things to be cut out of athletics -- initially and mostly. They don't understand there are A LOT of worthless positions at state-schools (any schools really) that could be cut. They think just because someone CAN pay something, they SHOULD be paying it. I'll echo what's been said before, if he earned it...so be it. There's so much more to higher education and its costs outside of the "scholarship money."

This whole debate comes right on the heels of me finishing a research paper on the ethics of athletics and academics being structured together. Gotta love business ethics, MBA program, and going to class well into the summer months! Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Because the offers were all over the place, and his HS record wasn't great. He's a 5'9" (at most) 175 lb (at most) corner who played in a lousy league and looks like he's 14 years old.

If he turns out to be a great UCLA corner, I'll be the first to eat crow.

This. It's all about getting a return on their investment, and the ROI on this kid will be substantial. Kudos to UCLA.
