So Sean Combs' son received a scholarship to play football at UCLA and someone brought up the argument that he shouldn't have accepted it and that he should return it. Mike Wilbon mentioned it tonight on PTI and of course made it into a racial topic. He basically said that if the kid of a rich white celebrity was offered a scholarship no one would say anything. I personally don't think that is the majority opinion of the country but that is just me. What say you?

SMFH. This has nothing to do with race. The kid earned the scholarship who cares if he's rich or poor.

Well obviously it wouldn't be bought up if he was white, because white people aren't good athletes.

It wasn't that much of an issue for Jordan's son at Illinois, who although didn't pan out (and isn't white) was still considered a legit recruit. How many schools in the BCS were actively recruiting Combs? He was a 2 star at best playing in a crappy Westchester County league (note to people that don't know, many suburban leagues outside of NYC are notorious for awful football). If his notoriety got him on the team, I can see how some would be a bit put off that not only is he on the team, he gets a schollie.

Need to edit the above, Jeffrey walked on to Illinois (no schollie) it was his younger brother Marcus that was the more renowned recruit.

According to Rivals He had 2 other BCS offers (Illinois and Virginia) plus 3 additional FBS offers. According to Scout he also had offers from Iowa and WVU.
He had legit offers, so it doesn't look like his notoriety got him on the team.

I don't have a problem with him accepting the scholarship

And btw, there are hundreds of "2 star" athletes in the NFL.

I don't think Combs will be one of them - just looking at his profile on rivals.com I can't believe he has nearly the physical presence to be a starting CB. I know on thesabre.com (the UVA sports board) people were laughing at him being offered over better athletes in the Hampton Roads/Richmond schools.

That said, if UCLA wants to give him the schollie, fine by me. I don't see him ever being a meaningful athlete given his track record. If I'm wrong, I owe you an internet coke.

If the kid earned the scholarship, he earned it. SMH at anyone QQing about it, because his father is rich. They need to GTFO.

Can't stand Wilbon or Kornheiser - they absolutely suck. He makes things about race 1) because he's black and 2) it gets people talking.

If he said "yeah he earned it big deal move on" he doesn't get the same attention. But fuck those two.

I don't think race has anything to do with it. Did Peyton and Eli Manning accept full schollies? I don't know but I would assume the answer is yes - even though Dad could have paid their way. The issue is whether Combs deserved the offer, which should be a matter for UCLA fans only.

The kid earned it, deserves it, keep it. It shouldn't matter that his father is a mogul. Also, race should not have even come up here. Just another opportunity for Wilbon to make an issue out of nothing.

Based on his other offers, he earned it. Also let's not kid ourselves. Even if he didn't earn it let's not act like he is the first non blue chip athlete that received a scholarship due to connections.

why in the hell would they give him a scholarship because of his dad?..what would they gain by it? i would think given their record the last 5-10 years they cant afford to waste a scholarship on anyone.

If people have an issue with him, then I guess every school shoudl investigate every kid and thier parents earnings per year before handiong out scholarships. I'm sure there are plenty of kids who parents are very wealthy on scholarships, just their parents are as high profile. The kid earned it (so to speak with football skill, not academic) so everyone should shut up about it.

Yup. There are a lot of football players on scholarship that are the sons of former players and its never been an issue before. What is Golic saying about this? He has two sons on scholarship at ND and his daughter will be a freshman next year on a swimming scholarship.

I think this whole thing started because people from UCLA were saying the money should go to underprivileged kids. They probably don't have a great concept of how athletic scholarships work.

Not to mention there are more than plenty of kids who get accepted to schools, because of their parents, even though they had no business going to those schools.

UCLA can most likely get that back plus a lot more if Ditty make contributions to the school since his son is playing there.

I think you're about the only one. PTI is the best show on ESPN. Top 3 at worst.
