All I know is, I deal with a lot of Canadians here in te summer and they all, for the most part, suck.
For some reason, they have inferiority complex with Americans and come over here with crabby attitudes. By far the worst demographic I deal with. New Yorkers being a distant 2nd.

1. The U.S. border agents were certainly bored and being dicks.
2. The Canadian was copping a "your questions are stupid and you're a stupid American for asking me your stupid American questions" attitude.
Totally unnecessary from both parties.

As much as it sucks, if you just answer his questions as politely as possible, no matter how ridiculous, you won't be detained.
Just answer questions like Con_Alma would.

Knowing what store you'll visit in a mall is completely irrelevant to border crossing. It only ended up mattering because the border guard decided to be a dick and make it matter instead of just using common sense.

I've been stopped by or in contact with police a hand full of times and have never had a negative experience. The guy is doing a job. He may be doing it badly, but if you don't want to be detained, just answer his questions no matter how stupid, as politely as possible. After you return, you can file a complaint with his supervisor.
