But Valdez is a career .300 batter off Zito. Of course, he hasn't faced him since 2007. But that is the "excuse" from Fay and the like.

Zito gives up a lead-of hit and is able to hold him on first until he can get the utility player to hit into a DP, then pitches around the 3 and 4 hitters to get to the one he can get out, Bruce.

The middle of the order wastes a lead-off hit! Where has Bruce's pre-season point of emphasis gone? He said he couldn't let his emotions get the best of him and discipline himself to go the other way. He did fine for the first bit and looked away and then got to turn on a couple and hit them out, then his emotions got him and he hasn't tried hardly at all to hit the other way since!
