How the balls can anyone put DeNiro 17???? I dont want to be that guy that says I cant take your opinion seriously, but at 17...I just cant take it seriously.

Also, not nearly enough love for Dustin Hoffman. His role in Rain Man alone puts him in a category that VERY few actors can ever achieve.

In both The Fighter and The Machinist, Christian Bale is severely skinny. Say what you want about his acting skills, but the dude is anything if not dedicated.

You're right, the more I think about it, the more I can think of actors I like better than DeNiro, I might move him down into the 20's.

American Psycho?
The Machinist?
Empire of the Sun?
The Prestige?
The Fighter?? (even if you didnt like the movie, Bale owned the role)
Newsies!!??? (joke, but I loved that movie as a kid growing up lol)
Mooney44Cards;1123079 wrote:Pacino and DeNiro peaked way too early in their careers.

Pacino was solid in Godfather I, peaked in Godfather II, made a few more solid films in the next 10 years or so (Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface) and has really done some stinkers since. Glengarry Glen Ross notwithstanding.

DeNiro was awesome in Godfather II, peaked in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, had a slight comeback with Casino, and has been pretty average since.

Daniel Day-Lewis is aging like a fine wine. Admittedly, his reputation can't really get tainted by bad movies because he's so selective that he's never really in any. And he has the rare enough quality of being so compelling on screen that even the most mundane movies (There Will Be Blood) are interesting BECAUSE of him.

Unfair criticizm. DDL is 15 years younger. At that age, Pacino was still putting out really solild movies. Hell, The Insider was up for Best Picture in 1999. At the agi DDL is, Pacino made (Heat, Insider, Donnie Brasco, Scent of a Woman (won an Oscar), and Carlito's Way). Pacino isnt as selective, but his ability and effort didnt give way till around the age that DDL is now. I think DDL is a better actor, and have him probably only behind DeNiro, maybe Hoffman as well. But Pacino didnt peak too early (though Godfather was his best). Its just impossible to top that. He was also really good in the Kavorkian (sp) HBO film.

De Niro I also disagree with. Again, I think Godfather II and Raging Bull are his best roles. But he made great movies since. Ronin, Cape Fear, Awakenings????. He even showed a different side in Analyze This and Meet the Parents.

Not liking his movies, and not respecting his acting ability are two completely different things. Im sorry, but there are not 20 actors better. Not even 10. Bu I wont bust balls if hes #11.

I love pretty much all Matt Damon movies, but no way I have him in my top 15. His acting isnt taxed in pretty much any role, really.

Bottom line, he's also been in a lot of shit movies. T4, Rescue Dawn, Equilibrium, Public Enemies, Reign of Fire, Shaft, etc... Think he's a fine actor, but not elite in my opinion.

I dont think he is Elite. I think Ed Norton is Elite, if we are talking guys who never get mentioned in the best. I was just wondering if you liked those movies by Bale. I liked them all, but I agree...he is in some terrible movies.

Ok, well just out of curiosity. Why so low for him? He has done many, many roles and killed them all. Pacino I agree with actually. He is very 1 dimensional. Scent of a Woman was one movie where he had to show a range, and got an Oscar, but other than that...not much. He owns the role he has mastered though, so hes in my top 15 maybe top 10. But Im surprised you have him higher than De Niro.

Really though where's the love for Tom Hanks on this thread? He started as Alex's drunk cousin Ned on Family Ties, then with "A League of Their Own" jumped into dramatic roles and turned out some of the best movies of our time. I mean just look at his filmography...

A League of Their Own
Philadelphia(Best Actor)
Forrest Gump(Best Actor)
Apollo 13
Saving Private Ryan(Nominated for Best Actor)
The Green Mile
Cast Away(Nominated for Best Actor)
Road to Perdition
Charlie Wilson's War

And he helped direct Band of Brothers which is the best miniseries of all-time

The difference between DDL and some of the other actors mentioned (Pacino, DeNiro, Hanks, etc) is that I never watch a DDL movie and feel like I'm watching DDL play a character. DDL IS the character. Now, you can't watch a Pacino or DeNiro movie without it being painfully obvious that its Pacino and DeNiro playing characters. Hanks is the same way. They just don't convince me ENOUGH for me to consider them elite ANYMORE. Once upon a time maybe (seriously, watch Godfather I&II or Taxi Driver or Raging Bull and tell me that its not almost like watching completely different actors) but they've become parodies of themselves almost. Say what you will, but DDL hasn't reached that point yet, and I doubt he will with his range.

Hilarious, although it was his uncle (drinking vanilla extract). Hanks is good but his films haven't always stood up to time. I love A League of Their Own and Saving Private Ryan, but Forrest Gump has aged worse than bad gruyere, and he's done little in over a decade.

I agree with that. My point is, DDL is 15 years younger. If in 5 years he is still doing it, that will be fair criticism.

I think DDL will be awesome for years though, so I agree. Just saying DeNiro and Pacino DID turn in great performances and characters into their mid 50s, which is where DDL is right now.

DDL is about 1 great role away from overtaking De Niro on my list as #1 though. I hope Lincoln will do it. Vito Corleone in Godfather II is still my favorite character ever though, and his villain role in Cape Fear as Max Cady, is one of my favorite bad guys ever. Then the Taxi Driving mirror scene is just classic.

DDL has Milkshake as an amazing scene. Has Butcher and Plainview as characters. Both have a range of movies and types of movies.

Ill say this. If all actors and actresses had the work either and commitment of a lot of the guys on this list (and add Meryl Streep on the female side). Hollywood would be in MUCH better shape.

I like Hanks, but I think his movies are incredibly overrated. And, while he carries a lot of films, his ability hasnt been tested all that much, imo. Forrest Gump was a tough role, and he killed it (though the movie sucks, imo). But the others are simple characters for the most part and dont take a whole lot of adapting to the role. He is very good in most his roles, but the range and what is required in his films dont add up like the others for me.

Saving Private Ryan was amazing. It had everything. Hanks killed it. But to be honest, that movie is A+ with me in the role lol.

I think that is the first time I have heard anyone say Forrest Gump sucks. Ha

I really like DiCaprio. I know he isn't top 5 of all time but I like most of his movies and he does bring in some good performances. Hard to say his performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape wasn't solid.
