Why are professional athletes on that list? Unless they were a Rhodes Scholar or Academic AA or something of that nature while in school, that's kind of stupid to include them.

I'm not comparing the list to any other alumni. I am merely pointing out that there have been more than one alum who has been been able to do more with their life than work the night shift at UDF.

Regarding Rich Franklin, sure he is a MMA fighter but the dude was a school teacher with a Bachelor's in Mathematics and a Master's Degree . He's a pretty sharp guy actually.

No problem there. But Martin and VanExel, to name a cpl? Do they really make you proud? Collingsworth is ok, but that was law school even. He wasnt a UC athlete.

Ohio State does have some steep admission requirements and are a very presitigous school. However, there is no excuse for being academically inelligible. I would love to see some of these young men go through the curriculum of some of the nation's private, division 3, liberal arts colleges in the country. These young men are quite lucky that they have tremendous size and athletic ability because many would be unable to cut it in a very academically competetive setting. Unfortunately, many of these stud athletes don't take advantage of the great academic opportunities awarded to them. Sports provide a nice back-door entrance for many underqualified students and more often than not, these athletes pass on the opportunity for a great education. I think this is an area that needs to be more strictly watched with greater punishments for those that do not reach academic eligibility requirements. We all know that many athletes get away with poor grades because the coaches and athletic directors pull strings to have their best athletes on the field.

Yeah and a lot of them are there for the same reason a regular student is--to become a professional. In their case it's for their football skill. And they more than make up what the university gives them--they also bring in money that benefits every student at the school. I do not think he should play if he's ineligible or anything like that--but some people just need to accept that some guys aren't there for their brains. Does that mean they shouldn't get a chance to do the same thing the other students are doing--trying to reach the professional level? Normal students fail classes too--the VAAAAAAST majority of the football team passes their classes, a few guys that don't does mean it's a problem throughout the program.

^^There's a reason they are called student-athletes and not athlete-students. The most important aspect of going to college is the education, not the athletics. You can say all you want about becoming a professional, but no one can guarantee a successful career as a professional athlete and then they have no backup option to revert to. How many professional athletes suffer career-ending injuries and are left with nothing? I've heard numerous stories of this nature. I tip my cap to those who are diligent with their studies and get the job done in the classroom to earn their degree. At least they have a life after their sport. I think it's a bit of a sour subject for a lot of people. Yes, these young men are extremely talented, but they go on to be paid outrageous amounts to play games. Others work their tails off in an educational setting and go on to be doctors, engineers, scientists, and lawyers.....yet they still earn a small percentage of what a professional athlete makes. I'm just not a proponent of making exceptions for students because of athletic ability. Everyone needs to be held to the same standards and be forced to work equally hard in the classroom. Intelligence is something that can always be improved and it's the key to success.

Dr. Kistner was a well-known gynecologist who specialized in the treatment of endometriosis and was involved in the early development of the birth control pill. There have been plenty of OB/GYN's to graduate from UC.

darby.....I assume you are from the Pennsylvania area and are familiar with the PAC? And you're absolutely right. So many quality schools in this area. Many people don't realize how much is demanded in academics at a small school. Smaller class sizes means you can't fall asleep in the back of a 400 person lecture hall like at state institutions.

I go to a rival PAC school.

Every major football power school has easy majors for those looking to major in "football", so there is no excuse for being ineligible other than laziness, or a learning disability which they provide plenty of help for. I am surprised that Duron would be ineligible since I have heard his Dad talk on TV and the radio about calling him and making sure he is going to class every day, so I am sure he will be on him and get it figured out in the future. I do not see it having a huge impact on the Rose Bowl.

As far as Ohio State and Cincinnati being comparable schools academically, I can't believe it is even a discussion. I got my undergrad from OSU and I am currently attending Cincinnati, so I have no bias towards either. You need a GED and a pulse on the ACT to get into UC. OSU used to be that way back in the 80's and has a bad rep because of it, but Holbrook came through and significantly raised the standards. Average ACT score is now 27 for freshmen, and most of them were at least top 15% in their high school class. Both schools have easy majors, as do all football power schools. You are not automatically an idiot for going to a school like Cincinnati, some of their programs are top notch. However, to say Ohio State is not academically better than most of the schools in the Big East and SEC is factually not true.
