At the Feb. 17 Board of Directors meeting, the Ohio HS Football Coaches Assocation/OHSAA Football Tournament Committee made three proposals to the OHSAA Board of Directors. http://www.ohsaa.org/news/board/02-12BoardHighlights.pdf

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association/OHSAA Football Tournament Committee reviewed its recent meeting, which resulted in several proposals to present to the Board of Directors. First, that the Board not adopt any expansion of the current tournament format. (Of note, an OHSAA-appointed Division I Committee has been studying possible changes to the football tournament format stemming from enrollment disparities between the smallest and largest Division I schools.) Second, that the Board give the OHSFCA/OHSAA Tournament Committee until July 1 to develop a reclassification concept (in football only) that could move a team up a division(s) if the majority of its regular-season schedule is against schools in higher divisions. And third, that beginning in 2013, Harbin computer points only be earned by defeating schools that are members of the OHSAA or one of the other 50 state associations under the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

The second proposal seems to say that if your team plays six games vs. teams in high divisions than your own, your team can be moved up one or more divisions. An example: Division VI St. Henry finished 2-8. Six of their games were against teams Division V or higher. Would this proposal move them up to Division V?

That's pretty damn silly. Obviously a stint on the short bus is required for a seat on the Tournament Committee. That said, I like the idea of phasing out the Canadian cows.

Another interesting proposal to screw over teams trying to play up to get ready for the playoffs.

If this passes, any hope that Mooney had of playing any of the public schools in the area of a similar size would be absolutely gone. No chance Poland would schedule Mooney so that Mooney would have to play up and end up moving up a division. Ahh...what am I saying...Poland wouldn't play Mooney anyways.

Bottom line, I wish the OHSAA would stop trying to punish teams for being good or playing up to try to get better.

But like I always say...there will always be people complaining. Put Mooney wherever you want and they'll strap on the helmets and play.

Steubenville would really be screwed if this passes. Every year we play a majority of games with teams that are Div. I or Div. II. We are Div. III. We have a hard enough time getting a schedule without the OHSAA messing things up.

Don't blame this on the OHSAA. This proposal came from the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association/ Ohio Football Tournament Committee. If a proposal like this came from high school football coaches, makes you wonder if it would pass.

The only difference is that football coaches don't vote. There are many things the Coaches want and don't want that get through or not respectively.

Does this mean points will not count against Texas or Massachusetts schools?

They're NFHS members, so they're fine.

It eliminates the Ontario schools, mostly... though all Canadian provincial associations are affiliate members, so they better write their ruling to specify FULL members, otherwise it accomplishes nothing.

Let's be honest here fellas, "playing up", is a byproduct of what? Having the athletes year in and year out. The Mooney's and Ursulines can play DI schools, how ridiculous is that?

It might need tweeked a bit . Teams that play bigger teams and have bad seasons dont need moved up .
People know there is a problem when a division V team can compete for a D-I title and Ursulin certainly could have competed for the D-I crown several of these past seasons. Mooney Same thing . People are tired of these universities . Things need to change and atleast they are trying

Most do for sure . Like when you see a private school go 5-5 and make the state semis or a 6-4 team go all the way . Im thinking in terms of a three year window for schools . You do have some rural schools that are maybe D-6 and most of the teams they play are D-5 . I just think a tweek here or there in the rules thats all . We all know the middle division catholic schools that are juggernauts and Delphose St Johns ofcourse.

Like Marion Local in 2009? 5-5 in the regular season and lost to DSJ in overtime in the state semis.

MAC schools schedule up on a routine basis: 1. to play against great competition to challenge us and make us better, 2. because a lot of schools our size won't step up and schedule us out of fear.

In 2011, Div VI St. Henry played six teams Div V or larger. DSJ and Marion Local each played five teams Div V or higher. In 2009 Marion Local played seven teams Div V or higher. In 2007 and 2008, DSJ played seven teams Div V or higher.
You know, maybe some day people will look at the success the MAC schools have and wander on over to western Ohio and see what we're doing and try to do it, too.

You can't always go by the schedule. Mighty Massillon had the following schedule last.

3 d1
3 d2
3 d3
1 d5

At first glance, that schedule looks extremely weak for a D1 school. However, it did prepare them to go undefeated in the playoffs last year.

Yeah, I guess it's common practice for schools with 173 boys to schedule schools with 1059.

Anyone can schedule anyone. Many of the real Massillon fans are very upset with the soft schedule that Massillon sas been playing lately. It was brought up a recent booster meeting how the Massillon community takes pride in calling their team "The Best Team Money Can Buy", but they are afraid to play anyone. Many of the real Massillon fans would like to go away from this current method of bringing in an all-star team every year and build a team from the lower level up. Many of those teams that build from the lower levels on up play challenging regular season schedules to prepare themselves for the grind of the playoffs.

honestly ? How can you say they are playing a soft schedule? Really ? Cmon man dont put personal dislike in your fact sheets . I dont have there schedule on hand right now but Ive seen it and they have several former state champions on it .

Also Ursulin and Mooney get to get kids in from a huge metro area and have the state pay for the vouchers . they have a small enrollment but field an all star team from Y.Town every year . Everybody knows this .

There are also 13 schools within a half an hour drive from Mooney and Ursuline that they are competing against for those students. Name another D3 or D5 school that has to do that.

As I've said before, your argument shouldn't be in the private/public category. You just don't think it's fair that rural schools have to compete against urban schools.

They played 3 D1 teams that had a combined record of 20-13
3 D2 teams that had a combined record of 18-12
3 D3 teams that had a combined record of 18-14
1 D5 team that had a record of 4-5

Their average opponent was division 2.3 with a winning percentage of .5769. A D1 school whose typical opponent is a small D2 school with 5 or 6 wins has a weak schedule. Most Massillon fans want to see the schedule upgraded.
