Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about how far you hit it. Of course, I'm not the site guru on golf lol.

I played with 3 guys the other day who were all over the age of 70 and were hitting woods and sometimes driver off of 150-160 yard par 3's. All 3 of them shot in the low 40s, from the whites.

I shot +2 on a fairly easy course and hit pretty good drives all day but only had to fix 1 ball mark on the green. Got up and down out of the sand, numerous times off the green and putted one in from 4 feet off the green. My only good iron was a 7 iron from 130 (yes)....put it 5 feet away and made birdie. Twice I hit 8 irons from 110 and came up short. I have to jump on a wedge to get it 100 (I'd hit a 9). From 150 I'm thinking between 5 or 6 iron.

My iron shots as I can recall...

140 yards....missed right...in bunker
115 yards....short and slightly right
130 yards....drilled it
110 yards....short and right
130 yards....lifted up a touch for a lucky bounce onto green
165 yards...hit left into green-side bunker
150 yards....left 5 iron just short
110 yards....left 5 yards short of green

I don't worry about it. My only problem is when I get into long iron territory, cause I only have 4 & 5 hybrids, then I jump to a 3 wood, which I'm terrible with.

Yeah, I used to hit my 6 iron around 170 but made some swing adjustments that really helped the power. Just like you, I used to hate being 190-200 out because I had a hard time hitting my 3 hybrid or 3 wood consistently, but now its not so bad knowing I'm using an iron from 200 on in. The problem for me now is just getting it less than 200 in, haha.

Age 18 6-iron 185-195
Age 37 6-iron 140-150

In high school I hit my 9-iron from 140-150

Basically, my driving is close to the same. My chipping and putting is fairly close to back in the day.....and I've lost 45 yards off of each iron. Really rely on playing smart.

Last two time out i shot 40 and 41. My best ever. I only started playing 2 years ago. I hit the ball far but off line on my iron shots to the green.
My Irons are
7 iron -200 ( best club i hit )
8 iron 180
9 iron 170 ( never hit this club well)
pw 150-160


Once i get my irons accurate i think my score will go down some. My chipping was adding some extra strokes as well but i am getting better at that. I lost about 10 strokes just by improving this part of the game.

I think I will get more distance when I buy a legitimate set of irons. When I started playing, a couple years ago, I bought an entire set(irons, driver, and bag) for only $200, because I knew clubs wouldn't make a difference until I was able to consitently strike the ball. I recently upgraded to a TaylorMade Superfast 2.0 driver that has made a big difference in drive distance, so I imagine a new set of irons will do me well.

Doesn't matter how far you hit your irons. My 6 iron is my 170 distance. Sure I can get on it and hit it 180-185 , but if I have 170 shot, I'm typically hitting a 6 iron with my normal swing. Anyone on here hitting a 6 iron from 190-200 out isn't getting it very close that often.

Played Detwiler today and went 39-42. Sad thing was I didn't play that well on the front but had 15 putts. On the other hand on the back I had 19 putts! Just proves how hitting the ball well doesn't do it the same way dropping putts do

Found this, 210 yards is a good 4-iron for Oosthuizen.

As for the albatross? He gauged it as 210 yards to the front of the green — a good 4-iron for him.

Thats my 3 iron so that makes since. Of course my typical drive is 280. I can hit it 300+ , but my chances of having an approach shot in the fairway is greatly increased at my normal swing.

Biggest advise I can give to a golfer is find a number for all your clubs and don't make that number as far as you can hit it. That goes for the driver too.
When I get to a tee box and see its 420 yards, all I'm thinking is driver 280, 9 iron 140. Not hit my drive as far as I can and go find it.

170 with a high fade, so I lose distance there.

6 iron, if I juice it, is probably 180. But i like to hit little cuts into greens which takes a few off. Honestly it more depends on wind and elevation more than anything. Amateurs do a terrible job of changing clubs in these situations. Like look at Tiger last weekend, he took 9 iron from 190 into 18, but it was hot, downhill and a little downwind. I also saw him take 6 iron from 171 in the same event, but different lie and shot dictated that.

I wasnt going to get into different shots bc that will confuse most people even more. My 170 is my normal cut. If i have to muscle it 185 that's the draw. Of course my distance control with my draw has been terrible for a few years now and the reason I'm playing to a 3.9 right now and haven't been below a 3.0 in 2 years. And was as high as a 4.7. To get your handicap low you have to have great control of all of your shots.

Here's my rounds this year.. All at Chippewa golf club. I've had other 9 holes elsewhere in leagues subbing and what not, but nothing I recorded.

Pretty much like Zwick, a nice smooth 6-iron is about 170-175. Can muscle one up to about 185-190 but accuracy is greatly affected.

So I misplaced my old 588 56 degree wedge. I also could use a new driver currently hitting a Cleveland 400 launcher.

Have you hit the TaylorMade Superfast 2.0 driver? It's about $20 more than the Diablo Octane, but I love it. I hit pretty much everything Callaway, Cleveland, Ping and Adams had, but didn't like any of them nearly as much as the Superfast.

The new 588s are awesome. I have the 56* and 60*. Waiting for my r11 irons to come in today or tomorrow. Will be R11 driver, 3wd, 3hy, 4-AW then cleveland 56, 60, with an Odyssey putter.
