There is no other sport with this consistent a problem with their top stars getting injured. Granted, some of it is unavoidable. But they need to provide incentives to keep these guys from training like idiots and breaking their body down/opening themselves up to freak accidents. When you're having to cancel events because one guy falling off the card kills it, it's time to take proactive measures.

If you don't defend the belt for 8 months, you should be stripped of it. Not an interim champ, just stripped period. Some sort of financial penalty for pulling out of a fight after you've signed the contract would also be good. Maybe 10% of your next fight's purse goes to the opponent you canceled on?

We don't see the issue to the same extent in wrestling or boxing.

Not for me I was set to be stuck at a wedding that night of the original fight date.

Look at the list of stars and champs and how long they have been out:
Pettis hasn't fought since August of last year and won't fight until December
Cain hasn't fought since last October, returns in November
Hendricks has been out since March and who knows when he will return
Aldo hasn't fought since February
Jones will have 9 months in between title defenses
No GSP, no Anderson til January.

The biggest problem right now in MMA is this, stars and champs aren't fighting and defending their belts enough. How can you build stars and gain any type of momentum if you fight once a year?

Just a comparison to Mayweather

2 fights in 2014
2 in 2013
1 in 2012
1 in 2011
1 in 2010
1 in 2009
0 in 2008

9 fights in 7 years. Were just spoiled by some of the guys who went so long being able to fight 3-4 times a year.

BTW Pettis has had 16 fights in that time
Cain 12
Hendricks 16
aldo 14
Jones over 20

mayweather became an established star after the De La Hoya fight so it doesn't matter how many times he fights. The Mma guys listed are still trying to reach that level, it's killing their growth potential and the Ppv market right now. Pettis has fought like 4 times in the last 3 years or something like that.

Mayweather also fought 22 times his first 3 years of professional competition.

Regardless, Floyd was an established champion for that entire time you listed, and also essentially an independent contractor since the belts in boxing mean absolutely nothing.

The vast majority of those guys amassed their fights while working their way up the ladder and then fell off once champion. The UFC belt also means something and the lack of its defense limits other fighters potential to become top draws and make money.

It's inexcusable that Pettis won the belt and hasn't even had his first defense 15 months later. The LW division has been held hostage. How is he not stripped?

Ronda Rousey kicked some ass in Expendables and she looked great doing it.

I'm not really that pumped for the card tonight, but it's free so I'll tune in.

Gray Maynard, what a sad fall from grace. Just can't take a shot anymore. Fell in love with his striking and his career is basically over because of it.

Not the most highly skilled night of fights, but man there were some brawls. Baczynski/Jouban and Boetsch/Tavares were crazy. I thought Watson was out on his feet too, but he managed to hold on for the win.

Tom Watson is a tough sob, broke his tibia and still won the fight.

This. Bader at least knows when to go back to his roots.
