I didn't listen but Rogan, Brendan Schaub, Bryan Callen, and Eddie Bravo did a fight companion podcast where they basically have a live podcast going while the fights are happening. I heard they were saying the same thing, that it would have never been licensed in the US. In the US they look at the professional experience of the fighters at the weight class they will be fighting in. Apparently in boxing they take into account your amateur experience as well. I guess the guy Stipe was fighting was considered a small 205er and had no business being at heavy weight. He weighed in at 225 lbs, only 15 shy of Stipe. Like I said I didn't listen so I don't know their reasons, but I'm assuming because Fabio is alot smaller, less skilled and over matched in pretty much any aspect of fighting. He weighed 225, but was soft and fat. Stipe was clearly the bigger man. This stuff is not an exact science at all, Nelson is obviously fat and knocks people out, and Hendo fights bigger guys like you said. It was just one of those fights that seemed like a huge mismatch, and then when it ended so quickly everyone jumped in with I told you so.robj55;1621976 wrote:Why wouldn't it be licensed?

Yeah it was a huge mismatch, I didn't expect it to end that early though. They are supposed to look at skill levels as well. Heck, Hendo beat Fedor for crying out loud so if they were really liscensing correctly I wouldn't have a problem with that fight but might have had one with the Stipe/Maldonado fight.robj55;1622515 wrote:He weighed in at 225 lbs, only 15 shy of Stipe. The one that I thought was close to being unlicensed was the Couture/Toney fight. The NSAC/CSAC/etc are mostly boxing guys and probably thought that Toney was above and beyond Couture, because they aren't that smart. So it was a 'odd ball' case.
However, they would never let a guy that is just coming out of the NAAFS here in Ohio fight Jose Aldo in his first fight for instance. They could be liable for negligence if any severe injuries occur (as could the UFC for scheduling an unfair fight).

I know Maldonado isn't on the same level as Stipe but he is still a guy who has won fights and been competitive in the UFC, albeit at 205. Maldonado was also 22-0 as a pro boxer, although he didn't fight anyone of note. I never looked at this fight like oh man Fabio is going to get seriously hurt, I thought it was going to be a back and forth was for a while due to his boxing and durability. I was just stating that they (the state ACs) are supposed to look at those types of things and the Couture/Toney fight is the one that REALLY surprised me, not the DC/Hendo fight.

I just don't like the idea of a top 7 heavyweight fighting a guy who is 4-3 (against bottom tier guys besides Glover) in the UFC. I don't even remember him beating anyone of note in his career. It's just a total mismatch. Luckily Vegas really missed the mark on this and only had Miocic at -550. I bet $1000 on him and took home a nice profit.

I think commissions will pretty much allow any fight to happen. If they weren't going to allow a fight based on skill I think it would have had to have been Cormier vs Cummins.

I bet it happened a decent amount in the early Fertita/Dana owned UFC. I highly doubt it has happened in the last three or four years. If they will sanction Toney/Couture and Mendez/Cody Macenzie, they will sanction almost anything the UFC makes.

It seems like 90% of the problem is when a fighter gets injured and they need a quick replacement. They are pretty much willing to give any fighter with a twitter account who says yes a fight.

I've even read about guys at smaller regional events who are pretty much plucked out of the stands to fight sometimes or fighters who will sometimes fight on a Friday and Saturday of the same weekend for different promoters.

With Dodson fighting this weekend, it got me thinking. He knocked out Dillashaw, who has obviously improved a ton since then, but does anything think Might Mouse could beat TJ? I think he could.
