OHSAA Board of Directors Meeting Highlights – January 12, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors met Thursday morning at the OHSAA office in Columbus for its regularly scheduled January meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete set of meeting minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org in the near future.

- The Board unanimously approved a motion to continue to support the work of the OHSAA’s Competitive Balance Committee, which meets again January 31. The motion was in response to a letter received from an Ohio public school superintendent that requested the Board of Directors immediately create a referendum item to go to the membership this spring that would place public and non-public schools into separate tournaments.

As a public school athlete, I had an even record with private schools.

Yes they can but their pool is smaller.

Competitive Balance???...just fill your non-league schedule with stronger opponents and quit playing cupcakes that do not prepare you for the playoffs. They need to to squash this proposal.

Over the past ten years, Steubenville Big Red has gone 40-7 against privates. Wins have included Mooney, Ursuline, Alter, Akron SVSM, Canton CC, Columbus Watterson, DeSales, and many others.

Nevertheless, I feel that the privates should have their own playoffs. The Catholic schools have recruiting opportunities that the publics just don't have. IF the privates choose to leave the OHSAA and form their own association, so be it.

You guys seem to be doing okay on that front.

In any case, your statement is patently false. Almost 80% of the state's districts have open enrollment. 64% have it statewide.

Exactly. There is nothing a private school can do within the rules to attract students that a public school can not.

In the communities of Steubenville, Warren, Canton, etc. why do the public schools have better players thand the private schools if the private schools have such an advantage?

Publics, even OE-statewide, have students they HAVE to take. Privates do not. It'd be great if OE publics could kick out any student that didn't meet some sort of higher standard than 'doesn't drown in their own drool'.

Many districts choose not to expel kids who do terrible things because each kid brings state money with him/her. Youngstown City Schools has decided not to expel kids because they lose the money that comes with that kid.

Public and Privates both do things to get better talent at their school everyone knows that, the Private schools who win alot just get noticed a little bit more.

How about they just leave it alone. Remember that there is more to high school than winning state championships, as stated earlier in this thread by FWK Big Red has beat private schools and so has many other public schools. What will be next, a seperate tournament for schools that can't win more than 5 games because other schools have better players?

I don't know of any private schools that are turning away students...and they expel kids for the exact same reasons that publics do. The notion that the privates intentionally "thin the herd" is another urban legend meant to rile up the mob.
