Watching this I get the feeling more that Green Bay mailed it in than Cleveland won it.
This was officially the dress rehearsal game since we play Philly next as well as week 1, and no one plays in the 4th game.
Still doesn't seem like we are anywhere near ready for live bullets week 1.
Weeden was OK, but my God is the offense pedestrian. We have a QB with a big arm and yet we are still running nothing but the dink and dunk routes we saw with McCoy.
What was the point of drafting him in the 1st round if the plan was to hand cuff him with the same shit McCoy was subjected to as far as the playcalling goes? Just doesn't make sense.
I am with-holding final judgement until I see what kind of difference having T-Rich makes to the offense. I would think its alot, but this offense just has zero personality still.
Unless they are saving it all for the regular season, I just don't see how we are any more competitive this year than we were last if the entire offense is predicated on 3 yard pass plays and predictable run calls (ran the ball on 2nd down literally every series when the 1's were in I think). Chilly really needs to be allowed to call the plays. I know he doesn't have much experience with it, but he was around #4 enough to see what you can do moving the ball downfield that maybe it rubbed off on him.

I said he has been in the league for two years. I didn't say he has started for 2 years or gotten all the reps for two years. With that in mind, he has still had TWO YEARS IN THE LEAGUE with professional coaches, trainers, etc. to prepare him and help him improve. He hasn't. If he didn't take advantage of his 2 years in the league to improve, that's on him.Pick6;1248904 wrote:He has started 22 games and didn't have a full training camp last year. I actually agree 100 % if shurmer continues to call plays like this it's gonna be like last year. Good thing is we have a new owner and if shurmer sucks this year he's gone

I agree with iggy for once as well. This was the "dress rehearsal" game. If nothing changes, no better than 6-10 IMO.

Why did we hire an offensive coordinator in Childress if they aren't going to let him call the plays? I was over on the OBR forum to see what they thought of the game, and it is the same refrain about the playcalling.Pick6;1248933 wrote:I agree with iggy for once as well. This was the "dress rehearsal" game. If nothing changes, no better than 6-10 IMO.
Why did we draft a QB with one of the best arms around if the intention was to put the ball and chain on him like that. No shots at all down field to even give it a try. Now is the time more than any to take chances like that and see what comes of it so you know heading into the season what you have.

I agree with this as well. Weeden needs to be allowed to make aggressive mistakes so that he can learn from them. Even if he isn't completing a high percentage of deep throws, letting it fly every once in a while will keep defenses honest. However, the dink and dunk that Shurmur seems to be obsessed with is ridiculous and more like Madden football than NFL. If we're going to hire a guy like Childress to coordinate our offense, he needs to be calling the plays so that Shurmur can focus on other things.IggyPride00;1248913 wrote:Watching this I get the feeling more that Green Bay mailed it in than Cleveland won it.

Yup...I agree with everyone up above. 35-10 Browns and we definitely suck. Tonight's game proves that we will be 3-13 at best.

Things like this are why Holmgren will be back in Seattle next year and we will be on another new regime.Dr. KnOiTaLL;1248942 wrote:Right, I don't understand it...
To let a first time head coach with minimal playcalling experience as O-Coordinator (and both of those years ranked in the bottom 15% of the league in offense) call his own plays was completely ridiculous.
To then let him continue to call his own plays after a 3rd consecutive season as the play-caller of a bottom 15% offense is the kind of stuff people get fired over.
Jimmy Haslam will clean house of this gang because of their ideological rigidity and refusal to adapt the system to their talent instead of being content to lose as long as the system stays pure.
I think the Browns are primed to be a 49ers type gig next year with a bunch of talent that was mis-managed and underachieved because they didn't have competent leadership. Seeing what Harbaugh did just shows what can happen with the right guy guiding the ship with largely the same group of players.
We have a really solid young core I think, but they are just not being put in a position to succeed right now.

They went 15-1, we went 4-12.
If you watched the game tonight you could see they were mailing it in, and nothing really could be discerned from that score.

Don't care what happened last year. And yes, this is preseason. But the negativity is fucking gross. Yeah, our running wasn't great tonight. We didn't throw any deep balls. We had fifty penalties. Blah, blah, blah..IggyPride00;1248964 wrote:We also beat up on the Packers last pre-season.

Preseason or not, our receivers got wide open all night, and our quarterbacks found them. We stopped Aaron Rogers cold except for one pass. We shut down their run and the pass rush was excellent.
Green Bay doesn't have anything to prove in preseason whereby the Browns do....I get that. But for one lousy stinkin night, enjoy a 35-10 shellacking the Browns laid on a team that rarely ever loses at home.

I noticed Joe Haden was yawning in the 2nd quarter. You would think that there would be something he could take to combat that.

Go fuck yourself, Cowboys "fan."Pick6;1248773 wrote:Reps. I can just imagine it. Heckert: let's reach on a system qb that's old as dirt..that will help the offense out some. But wait, I'm not done, let's reach on a Pot head WR who hasn't played in a year then all of our problems will be solved!!
Pretty pleased with what I saw...not "happy" but pleased.
After a slow start, Weeden seemed to gain more & more confidence. Hardesty & Haden both bounced back and looked pretty good after bad starts. Hopefully T-Rich comes out of the gate fast but if he doesn't, and Hardesty stays healthy, I think we'll have a decent 1-2 punch.
This O-Line is going to be a force when they gel as a unit. I think they will be able to establish a VERY solid rushing attack.
WR's still suck dick. Still dropping balls and still running shitty routes. Catch the fucking ball!!! This means YOU, Gordon & Little. Travis Benjamin needs to return ASAP in that I noticed it was all pretty much dink & dunk since they had no vertical threat.
Still not sure what to think of the defense. They played bend, don't break against GB's 1's but GB has NO running game whatsoever. I think the secondary is going to be exposed by the lack of pass rush.
P.S. O'Neil Cousins can eat a bowl of dicks. Dude screws up twice and his first response was a shoulder shrug "whatever" and the second was a laughing smile? On the second one I was hoping Shurmur was going to turn around and punch him in the face.
Saw what I wanted to see from the offense....PROGRESS. Nothing earth shattering but it was solid improvement.
EDIT: For those bitching about not utilizing Weeden's "big arm", see my comments about Travis Benjamin. Is it Shurmur only calling the dink & dunk plays or is it that we still have crappy WR's who run poor routes and can't stretch the field? I think it's the latter. Josh Gordon is still running shitty routes and this will continue until he learns the system. He's best utilized on slants.
And can we get a FUCKING thread ban for bandwagon thread shitter Pick6? Fucking COWBOYS fan shitting on this thread? Someone start a Troy Smith thread and maybe he'll go over there. Dude is like jordo on Browns threads. I mean if you guys are going to give Iggy shit, might as well do the same to Pick6. Has nothing but negative shit to say on these threads.

BTW...didn't see any of the second half but heard that McCoy may have "auditioned" himself into being a Packer. I did see Harrell and he was brutal. I'd have no issue with them keeping McCoy as the backup but I just don't see it working with the fan base. Should a front office not succumb to fan "peer pressure?" Of course and I don't they would but it's an annoyance they don't need.

Like I said last night, I'm pleased with how the game went. I saw improvement across the board, but we still have things we need to focus on and get better. I know the schedule is brutal and we won't be favored to win many games, but I do think this team has the ability to win. I want to see continuous improvement this season and be in every game.
If I could have one wish for this season it would be that we can finish drives with touchdowns. No more settling for field goals. They have shown they can move the ball between the 20's, now execute and finish the drive with a td.
