He's got to leave the nest, eventually. If it works out for him...great. If not, he's got $750,000 ways to console himself as he puts together defensive plans for Ohio State.

I
don't know how I feel about that. I want him to stay, but I also think he has to prove himself if he ever wants to be the head coach at OSU again. This year did not do that for me.
He has played and coached all at the same place. There benefits to seeing how things are done at other places. I hope he stays on staff at OSU, but it may be in his best interest to look elsewhere to develop as a coach.

LOL he is just going to be cordial and get a free steak dinner. He has a better chance to be the next tOSU coach by staying with Urban than going to Pitt. He isn't going anywhere. Book it.

Co-Defensive Coordinator with one of Urbie's buddies probably doesn't go much beyond next season anyway...so might as well get while the gettin is good.

I could be completely off base, but I think he'd be more likely to move to a MAC/Sunbelt/CUSA school as head coach.

If he does move to Pitt, Marky May may spontaneously explode.

I think a year or two under Meyers' tutelage would benefit him greatly, but that's jmo...if he's feels he's ready to go, then he should go.

lol--yea, but working under another highly successful coach with different philosophies sure wouldn't hurt

Especially one who is basically an offensive genius. Let's be honest: offense in any form was not Tressel's strength.

[LEFT]Help wanted: Pitt opens coaching interviews with Fickell, Cristobal
Friday, December 16, 2011
By Paul Zeise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Pitt has started the process of finding its next coach, interviewing Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell Thursday and Florida International coach Mario Cristobal today.
They are the first known candidates to be interviewed. Scheduled to be interviewed Saturday is Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst.
Several other candidates are also expected to get an interview, including Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren.
One name to scratch off the list is Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads, who was near the top of Pitt's wish list, as Rhoads has agreed to a 10-year contract extension with Iowa State according to ABC 5 in Des Moines.

Why would PITT want a 6-6 coach to replace their 6-6 coach?

6-6 is apparently acceptable to Pitt. They didnt fire their coach, he left them.

Because 6-6 in the B1G is like 10-2 in the Big East.

Agreed. I dont understand why he hasn't gotten more looks. What he's done at FIU has been incredible.

Chryst would be a good hire.

Fickell isn't a head coach IMO

Nope. Agreed. He looked like the job was too big for him last year. He was unwilling to make adjustments (Bauserman, not playing Shazier more), was horrid with in-game decisions (timeouts, etc.), and his refusal to get involved with the offense was completely mind boggling

Fickell learning under Meyer would only help him, even if it were just for one season. It's obvious offense isn't his strong suit, so learning under and offensive guru would be of great benefit.

Fickell would then be able to combine philosophies from Tress and Urban and develop his own style then.

If Fickell ever wants the job at OSU, he will have to get head coaching experience somewhere, and be successful. He realizes this. This is an opportunity, not far from home, he knows the recruiting bases in the midwest very well. Big East football is nothing to brag about obviously. If he could go to a place like Pitt, do well, it would bode very well for his chances down the road. I doubt he would go looking too far away from Columbus. So the Pitt opportunity might be a good one for him and his family.

All the "he's not a head coach" posts crack me up. How does anyone know. He coached for one season of complete chaos, to say he isn't a head coach based on that is just shortsighted. He may or may not be, but there's no basis for thoughts either way.

There's some basis. Sure it is a small sample size, but the evidence of him not being head coach material far outweighs the argument for him being head coach material. In game performance is pretty easy to judge / evaluate. I mean what else should you use to evaluate him?

Just getting interviews or job offers doesn't necessarily mean you are a great coach. Look at Ron Zook.

Listening to yinzer radio this morning and they were discussing next coach. While Fickells name didn't come up, zooks did. To which one jockey says "he couldn't even win at Illinois "

Wtf is Pitt? Lol

I think it's tough to judge a guy as a head coach if they aren't able to put their own staff together.

Difficult to implement your style without your guys. Ohio State had a disappointing season this year, but Jim Bollman had as much to do with that as Luke Fickell.
