a shoulder patch honoring Schrock would be fitting until the stadium can be renamed.

True story......when I was in 1st grade and got my box of crayons, I had only two questions...
"why would crayola make a crayon called "ass gravy"? & who the hell would ever use it?"
several years later, on a visit to apple creek elementary school......my questions were answered.

Pallante used the Michigan style helmet in his last year.( Smithie school board member Scottie Boyes was the QB) Wolff kept the helmet design for his short 3 year stay, and Eichorn changed the helmet to the same Michigan style but with blue wings and light gray helmet.Red Rum;1164649 wrote:Now that I'm thinking about it, Pallante and company were pre-michigan helmet.

A Smithville/Loudonville week one matchup should be entertaining. I don't know how many contributors the Redbirds are returning but they were a better team last year than their 5-5 record indicated. All their losses came at the hands of teams that went .800 or better in the win percentage column and they destroyed all the pretenders, scoring 40+ points 4 times.
If anything is left in the cupboard at Loudonville, the Smithies will have their hands full in week one.

The financial workings of this should have been figured out by now. Even if Schar made a commitment, still need to get designs, bids and contracts lined up.Bobcat;1165055 wrote:Nobody seems to know anything about the turf at Norwayne. I am with Rum on this one. Guessing turf installers do lots of fields in the summer time. Not saying it can't be done, but it's getting late.

Is turf really needed at any of our schools? Seriously? Only one school district plays on our fields. We're all VERY SMALL SCHOOLS with budget problems. The costs have come down some I'm sure but its amazing the price. Additionally I believe it needs to be reconditioned in 20-30 years. Who will pay for this? I know those are not cheap either and when the field begins to break down it becomes as lumpy as any of the grass fields and is like playing in a rubber pellet filled sandbox.RedRider1;1165092 wrote:The financial workings of this should have been figured out by now. Having played on turf in college.... its not really that great. Nice when it rains but after 4 years of turf fields.... give me grass any day. I think this is just ridiculous that any of the schools in this area are considering this unless fully paid for by volunteers.

                                Jmar,
More like 10-15 years until the turf will need replaced. The replacement cost isn't as much as the initial cost because only the carpet is being replaced, not the gravel base.
I think any project to do turf at a small school would need to be fully supported by private donations.
In Orrville's example, we have 1 good field in our new campus of 3 schools...the high school field...and that can't host any more than 5-10 football games a year before it wears out & becomes mud.
Now imagine turf. You could host JV, frosh, varsity & middle school games...also JV & varsity soccer..also band practice & band shows...also workouts for spring sports while ball fields are wet...also Boys Club events (tackle & flag football etc .)
There will be some cost savings (no watering, fertilizing, striping, mowing) and over a 15 year life cycle, that does amount to some considerable cost savings. Enough to replace the field...not sure.
Turf increases the usability of a facility from 10-15 uses a year to literally daily if you wanted to.
I wouldn't call it a necessity, but certainly not a luxury either.

RR1 & Jmar both make compelling points. It would be interesting to see some actuarial science applied to the question of turf and its viability from a long term cost savings standpoint.
Right now, as far as the rural WCAL goes, turf probably doesn't make alot of sense. Imagine the fervor when a district beset by budget problems like bussing, rising utility rates, reduced staff and average academic performance installs turf. It will end up being a no win situation because someones always gonna claim it's athletics over academics....even if that's not the case.
The smart play by supers & BOE members who want to keep their positions is to stick with grass and hope for a resident gazillionaire to roll out the dough.
One thing we may not be addressing here is the actual kids playing the game....Mud Bowl games are alot more fun to play in than to watch.

I can see the benefits having this type of facility but I just don't see the point for it other than luxury for Norwayne. Orrville might be the exception though. You guys have a lot going on there and could "rent" some costs off to the boys club and other local organizations that could use the field. That and you're trapped inside of a "city". Space may be an issue there in the "city" of Orrville.
It is a luxury for county schools. There is no excusable explanation to justify this project. They have additional space for the types of additional events you list. I know many schools that have the band practice on the football practice field. I would assume that Orrville does the same except on game day practice where they use the actual fields. We've hosted multiple games for years on our game fields and some years have been better or worse than others but I can't recall anything catastrophic happening to justify this as a need.
Maybe our definitions of luxury are different. I just can't see this as anything but. Maybe we prioritize things differently. (This is at the bottom of a need/want list) If this how they choose to use money donated to the district, then more power to them. I just hope they don't lose any staff in the next few years or want a levy anytime in the future. This will be a major battle cry if those things happen despite the money only being donated for that specific purpose.
