I know McDaniels is an NFL guy, but the point remains the same. Top assistants get exposed all the time

So if it was say, 51 Heacock and 49 Fickell, how would it not be "their" defense. A family friend who is a walk on linebacker said Fickell called just as much of the defense and was just as involved with game planning as Heacock was under Tressel. It was THEIR defense the past few years.jordo212000;1015312 wrote:I know for a fact that Heacock had 'more' to do with it

I hope I'm wrong and he's an awesome defensive coordinator. I also hope it doesn't take him almost half of the season to adjust like it did this past year

Exposed how? McDaniels was and is a top NFL assistant. Failing as a head coach doesn't make it not so, completely different skill sets.jordo212000;1015527 wrote:Are these the same people who made the determination that Josh McDaniels was a "top assistant"

He is definitely not a top NFL assistant. His Tom Brady-less stops have been extremely poor. He singlehandedly drove the Broncos into the ground.queencitybuckeye;1015677 wrote:Exposed how? Sam Bradford looks nothing like the QB that we saw last year, etc. That's not the point though. The main point was that just because a handful of people thought he was going to be a top asisstant coach, it doesn't mean he'll always be one. I was also making the point that Heacock has been the main guy on the defense for the past few years. Sure Fickell maybe chipped in, but you are kidding yourself if you think he was calling the shots.
So... judging by the way he handled Bauserman's inept play, his inability to manage games (timeouts, etc.), and refusal to do anything other than status quo... I come to the conclusion that I remain unexcited to see Fickell be "the guy" defensively. He may prove me wrong though and I hope he does.

I dunno what his decisions on offense and as a head coach have to do with him being able to sucessfully focus on and run a defense.So... judging by the way he handled Bauserman's inept play, his inability to manage games (timeouts, etc.), and refusal to do anything other than status quo... Give the guy a break. He was asked to take over a situation that was a complete MESS. I am not sure ANYONE could have done anymore. Yes, I don't think he was ready to be a head coach at this level. But he was handed the keys to a completely wreck, not able to fix much(keep current coaches) and went with what he had to. I would like to believe if he had been given the opportunity, many changes would have occurred. But he wasn't. I did not like his handling of game situations either. But again, the guy was put into a NO WIN situation this year. Hard to gauge someone based on what he was handed.jordo212000;1015832 wrote:So... judging by the way he handled Bauserman's inept play, his inability to manage games (timeouts, etc.), and refusal to do anything other than status quo... Jordo is the only clown not satisfied with Fickell, cant say im surprised. Its not like people are out there trying to hire him for HC or anything...........
I praise him for the job he did.I think he did a GREAT job considering the circumstances. If he stays ill be happy, if he leaves, good for him.

False. Go back and read the game threads and discussion from this past season. Plenty of people were unhappy with Fickell. Your memory is truly terrible if you think I am the only person who has been /was critical of Fickell.Pick6;1017559 wrote:Jordo is the only clown not satisfied with Fickell, cant say im surprised. Fickell was definitely put in a tough situation and it was shame he didn't have more latitude with the coaches.centralbucksfan;1017544 wrote:Give the guy a break. "If" he was calling the defense like some suggest he was, then I am truly scared to death with him being given the keys. The defense was a major disappointment this season. For whatever reason Shazier was getting Klein's water for 3/4 of the season.
My main problem with him was his inability to adjust at all. Defensively and offensively. It took the team 2-3 weeks to adjust and he was outcoached on a consistent basis.
As I said before, I hope I am wrong, and I hope he does a great job next year. But going off of what I saw from him last year, I'm not too enthused about the defense. Give me Withers.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/979309-understanding-arkansas-route-to-paul-haynes-over-randy-shannon-as-new-dcHaynes shared co-defensive coordinators duties with Jim Heacock this season. Between the two new co-defensive coordinators, Heacock was the defensive play caller during the 2011 season, not Haynes
http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2011/06/veteran_coach_heacock_likely_t.htmlJim Heacock and Luke Fickell were co-defensive coordinators, though Heacock made the defensive calls and was the 1 to Fickell's 1A.

Josh did a great job with a backup QB at NE and got him set up for a sweet deal in KC. Agree that he struggled as a head coach but he did draft a QB while at Denver that is doing pretty well this year. Not every assistant coach is cut out to be a head coach, but that doesn't mean he is a bust as a coach.jordo212000;1015832 wrote:He is definitely not a top NFL assistant. Fickell has been offered the Pitt job. Has the weekend to decide.
I figured he'd leave at some point, but not this soon. Would really hate to see him go so soon.

Fickell is saying he's had contact with Pitt but no offer has been made yet. I doubt he'd lie about that.

I have this nagging feeling that Meyer would be thrilled if Luke took that Pitt job.
I know I would be happy to see him go.

I'd say you're roughly 100% wrong. Why would he want one of the best recruiters in the country to leave? You can attribute alot of the recruiting success to Fickell, he stayed in the ear of recruits, and as soon as the coaching situation was solidified, they started flipping.stlouiedipalma;1019473 wrote:I have this nagging feeling that Meyer would be thrilled if Luke took that Pitt job.
