There are exactly 3 D1 schools in Mahoning county. Hamilton county has 12. Cuyahoga County has 24. And with the voucher program...if you're a school that accepts voucher students, you have to accept all students with vouchers. You can't just pick and choose which voucher students to take. So there is no way to limit the amount of voucher students coming into a school.
Two pretty large suburbs and consolidating what used to be 6 Youngstown City schools down to one. Up until last year, there were only two D1 programs. There actually is a band at Mooney. The problem is, band is a very expensive extra curricular activity. The feeder schools do not have a lot of money, and therefore, have no sort of band program. In the public schools, thanks to all those tax dollars coming in, they are able to offer band to their students from an early age on. At the private schools, you learn the recorder in fourth grade music and don't see another instrument. I'm sure there would be a lot more kids interested in joining the band if it was something they were able to do from the fourth grade on like the public school kids do.
