The problem is Roby and Howard haven't screwed up enough to lose their position. Howard go beat on one play where he didn't turn his head and then got beat on another where he miss timed his jump after the QB had all day to throw. I wouldn't say he got abused.
I agree with your assessment of Roby and Clarke, but not Howard...the plays you mentioned were the obvious ones that led to scores, but if you watch him he doesn't seem to play the ball, instead reacting to the receiver after he catches the ball. Again, this is jmo, but I think Clarke gives us a tighter coverage presence in the secondary.

It's first row of B deck. I'm assuming those are good seats since it's first row? My buddy who took me to the notre dame/USF game for free, is now making up for how shitty that game was by taking me to this game for free. He knows im a huge bucks fan that has never been to a game and offered this to make up for the ND game. I told him that going to the game for free was enough but he insisted. I'll be drunk needless to say.

Howard had a really bad day against Colorado. On the one touchdown (I believe) he simply didn't turn back to look for the ball, and got burned. Had he turned back, he probably would have had an easy break up and possibly an interception.

That said, one of the things about most college DBs that drives me crazy is that they seem to be coached not to ever look back -- even though the ones that end up being really good seem to have found a way to do this without losing track of the receiver.

Because there is no face guarding rule in college football. In the pros they have to look for the ball, which is why the good ones will learn to do this, and your so-so corners will seem to never learn. You can productively defend while face guarding but just with everything in football, there are plays where only faceguarding can work and plays where only looking for the ball will work.

You need to tell Herbstreit about the college rule, since he spent several years saying how if players didn't look back for the ball they'd get called for interference "every time." It was both hilarious and pathetic.

In any event, I would think if a DB is headed toward the corner of the endzone and has crossed the goal line with the receiver, that would be the time to take a chance and look back. If my memory is correct, that was the situation with Howard.

DB's are coached to NOT look back until the receiver looks back. The great receivers especially the ones who have played with the same QBs for a couple of years don't look until the last moment.

The Buckeyes at home will find a way to send the faithful home happy. I'll say Buckeyes 24 Spartans 13.

Hopefully we can get that many points. Spartans always play us tough, and I'm not sold on the offense.

Anyone else going to this game?

Me too. Not sure where i'll end up as the regulars won't be tailgating saturday.

Also of note. Hankins and Sweat are battling nagging injuries. They will play, hopefully they will be effective.

I recently read that Sweat was feeling 100% for the 1st time this season. Can't remember where I read it though.

<sigh> Fickell just told the media that the thing that affected OSU offensively the most against Miami was falling behind 14-0...because if affected their balance.

The reporter from the O-Zone was posting snippets of things being said by Fickell at his presser. This was one of them, trying to explain why there was a problem with the offense after Miami took an early lead.

Well, unfortunately, I don't believe Fickell knows much at all when it comes to offense. I was at the Toledo game..when OSU was on offense, Fickell was as far away on the sideline as I have ever seen a head coach. He wanted no part of it.
Now, we all know Tressel wasn't much involved with the defense, but at least he admitted as much and had a basic knowledge. But fact of the matter is, during press conferense, with the QB and offensive issues, offense is going to be the main topic of conversation.

True...which IMO, isn't a good thing for the head coach. He doesn't come off well during pressers when most of the questions are about offense and QB situation. As much as we didn't like Tressel talking in circles...I am already tired of hearing Fickell talk like most high school coaches about "competing and playing hard".

I noticed the same thing during the Colorado game, OSU got a td and he was on the other side of the field and didn't even do anything. I know he doesn't really do anything with the offense but was still surprised he wasn't even by them on the field.

At the risk of being blasted again by some on here, I believe it shows how Panicked OSU was when they got behind -- because Fickell doesn't participate in offense and the defensive philosophy is to work with leads, not from behind. Fickell only knows how to function playing Tresselball, and that option was taken away when Miami got the ball.

Again, my interpretation.
