Yeah we don't have to ask for debit either since they need a PIN number.

I never used it as a debit card, just a credit card. From what I have been reading, they had no idea that this was a check card, just that it was a credit card.

I think my new thing is I am going to carry cash and a low limit credit card.

I don't use credit at all, I pay cash, well debit. Sometimes the debit machine is broke or places won't take debit so they have to run the visa check card as credit but that is still when they don't ask for ID and it pisses me off.

I'm not too familiar with the tiny differences between debit and credit cards, so can you explain this to me? Why would they be able to steal your identity on a debit card, but not on a credit card?

I never used my debit card as a debit card. I used it as a credit card. So basically it worked exactly like a credit card, but then just drew directly from my checking account. If a regular credit card # gets stolen, I'm not out any cash for any amount of time. I don't have any credit cards currently.

I seriously doubt this place is responsible for stealing your CC info. It could have happened months ago. People collect these numbers and then sell them. I find it highly unlikely someone there took your info and was ringing up charges 20 minutes later. You'd get away with that maybe once and if that's the case the person would probably wait for someone with the black cards - might as well go for broke if that's how you roll.

I've had my info stolen once, maybe twice. It was not a big deal and cost me nothing. I think the one time the CC company called me right away and got a hold on it. The other time I noticed it in my monthly review of my bills and, again, no problem. Just a bit of a hassle to go through and mark the disputed charges. The liability is always on the vendor who is responsible to verify info and generally they are just forced to eat the charges rather than take on the deep-pocketed CC companies with a hoard of lawyers.

Don't understand the debit cards. Direct access to my checking or savings account? No thanks, I'll stick with the CC. Use it almost everywhere, even at McD's on occasion though I usually carry some cash for such nominal/miscellaneous transactions.

You can process your debit card as a credit card. At least that was my understanding when they ask debit or credit.
LJ, get a check card. You can't spend what you don't have in your account. That's what I have through my bank, and I keep just a little bit of money in there, and then before I have bills due (rent, insurance etc) I go and deposit what I will need to pay the bill(s). Then I pay them right away. That way, the most anyone's getting out of my account if they get my card is about 20 bucks lol.

A check card is what they stole the information from and ran up ~$1000 on my checking account.

Huntington all but confirmed it was them. You know they don't have to have somoene there stealing it. All that has to happen is someone hacks their system and intercepts the charges that go through. They didn't just steal the card number, they stole all the electronic information off of it from a swipe and made a new card with that information.

I use an American Express card for most everything and cash for the rest. If someone steals that number I simply dispute the claim and it immediately comes off my bill.

Their customer service is wonderful.

In what i feel is a ridiculous rule, mastercard (and i think visa also) says it is a violation of the merchant cardmember agreement to ask for or require ID from a customer. All the clerk is required to do is make sure the signatures match. Seems as if this rule needs to be rewritten to accomodate the stuff that goes on in this day and age.

It is also against the rules for merchants to require a minimum amount to be charged to the card, as well as charging a fee for using a card. A lot of mini-marts and gas stations have tried to do this as of late.

they even have a website where you can report a merchant if they have asked you for ID when making a purchase, or wanted to make you charge a minimum amount.

Im about to start stealing peoples identities, it seems like there is no risk - do these people even get punished if caught?
