Fabby is right in her response. Few years ago a few stars of a football team put a fake deer decoy in the middle of the road. It cause an accident with serious injuries to a fellow student. He didnt die but was extremely messed up for quite awhile, and may still be.

The judge found the kids guilty, and said they should serve time after their football season ends.

It divided the town. Saw some local news reports that many town members were pretty pissed off about it.

so..the kids played and were to start serving time.......................after the season. I wanna say one of those kids ended up getting in trouble later in the season too and suspended for the last game, but I am forget.

What you think you would do has no bearing on what actually happened. Even is the sign were partially exposed, a driver wouldn't necessarily have time to process why it was covered or know that it is a prank. It is easy to say "should've known", but again, the point of traffic signs is so there is a clear directive. We're all conditioned to know that certain signs mean certain things and when you screw with that, there isn't a lot of time to sort through it before you're being run over by a truck. The cause of a fatal accident was an obstructed stop sign and those responsible have to deal with whatever consequences come their way.

It does if he is one of the 12 members of the jury. I'd bet the jury instructions would have something to do with what a reasonable driver would do.

In a civil trial, perhaps. In a criminal trial it wouldn't matter. Did these idiots show the mens rea and actus reus to get convicted? I suppose it depends on the jury but what were these guys thinking?

The worst part of that fiasco wasn't that the judge should have been immediately removed from office for that idiotic condition...it's that that cocksucker Mike Mauk refused to actually do what a football coach is supposed to do and either boot them from the team immediately or come up with some type of punishment that was in line with the crime committed. I don't give a damn what the guy's accomplished on the field, he's clearly a horseshit leader of young men.

As for this case, I've actually seen someone nearly get blasted into the stratosphere from a similar situation. Near where I live, there's a fairly dangerous intersection...typical four-way intersection with northbound and southbound stop signs. It's all 45 MPH, but if you're stopped there while going south, the trees on your right (west) jut out pretty far, and there's a very large electrical box on the left (east). Basically, even with a stop bar there, you almost have to pull into the intersection itself just to see if it's safe to proceed.

About five years ago, I was approaching this intersection while going south, and saw the car in front of me run the stop sign and nearly get hammered by cars in both directions. I realized then that the stop sign was gone; the post was there, the sign (and the "stop ahead" sign before it) was gone. The person in front of me probably wasn't from around the area and had no idea just how close they came to death. I pulled up to where the sign should have been and then off the road slightly, then called the township police to tell them...this was on a Sunday. I couldn't exactly live with myself if I had just left the scene, so I left my truck sticking out onto the stop bar to basically force people to slow down. Thankfully, I only had to play traffic cop for a few minutes before they arrived and put a fresh sign up.

I'm of the opinion that stealing or intentionally obstructing a stop sign should be a felony. If someone is injured or killed as a result of such an act, bump it all the way up to attempted murder or murder. And upon the guilty verdict being returned, take them out back and hope that a descendent of Vasili Blokhin is ready to carry out the sentence immediately.

The charge has been dropped against one of them who apparently remained in the truck and said it was a bad idea but didn't stop him.

He has never been one of the classy individuals in the game that is for sure. His team was involved in a bench clearing brawl in a scrimmage this year as well.

In the opposite direction......in the late 90's a coach from a team Kenton plays, and gets beat more times than not, had a kid who got caught drinking before the season started. It happened a couple of hours away from the town and he pretty much could hae gotten away with no one rinding out, but his parents insisted on him telling the coach about it. The coach had a strong stance against breaking the rules. The school or state mandates 20% of the season suspension, but the coach suspended him for the entire senior season. Kid was a two way starter and missed the full season and their team went to the state finals. Now, the players know the rules and such so it wasnt a total surprise. I have been around alot of the football players over the years with a diff sport and I can tell you that once the season starts they toe the line, and were scared to death to break a training rule. Did none of them drink at all? I imagine some did, but for the most part they wanted no part in getting popped for the entire season. There is the difference between class and what MM does up in Kentonkucky.

I believe so. That was the first class to have that coach for 4 seasons and I believe it was included in the training rules the coach gave out to the players. The players sign a form about it and once you do then you are under those extra rules. I think that they had hoped that since the season had not started yet that it would be different I guess. I am not sure. It evolved over the years I believe. The date the players had to sign their form became closer to the actual official practice would start. I think at one time it started when they began their offseason/summer conditioning program in early june.
