Popular high school teacher in New Smyrna hit his head, died surfing yesterday. Tough one for the kids to take, he has 2 attending NSB now.

Some are saying it shouldn't even have been classified a hurricane at the time it "hit" the coast.

Only because NYC was involved. I mean, they did get a foot and a half of rain near Pamlico Sound, so they are flooded to hell and back in NC and VA. The initial landfall lived up to it

What made this any different than hundreds of other storms? There was no levies to break and flood like Katrina. It wasn't even a Category 3 by the time it hit land. Just because NYC the media and government go nuts and tell millions of people to evacuate?

Category only has to do with wind. This storm had a large surface area, thus more rain than usual. High amounts are typical, but over a foot is extremely high. There aren't levees because the towns weren't built in a hole like New Orleans, and usually the rain from something like this is half as much.

Also, this storm had an absurdly low central pressure for its wind speed, so the storm surge potential was abnormally high for a storm with the surface winds that it had

They covered the initial landfall properly, but the 24/7 coverage could have stopped come Saturday evening as it weakened faster than expected because it hung over land instead of riding the shore over the water.

NYC was correct in ordering the mandatory evacuating of low lying areas. The flooding threat was legit.

Yes, up north it wasn't what it was billed to be.
But, in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland, in the direct path, it was still bad.
10 people, last I read, died, in those states, plus there was flooding and high wind.

But, up north, yeah it was overhyped.
That all said, better safe than sorry when it comes to planning and evacuations.

It's called "learning from your mistakes." Remember Katrina? Why take the chance? As was said above, better safe than sorry.

Bottom-line: It was touted for days by the East Coast media as the "next deadly Katrina" only because the storm - this time - was coming directly at them. As it turns out, Irene was a minimal hurricane that dumped a lot of rain like tropical storms are supposed to do.

I watched the coverage all night saturday, and in the morning today..and not once did I hear this is/was supposed to be the next Katrina.

Katrina was a category FIVE...this was at teh very worst a category 2. No one with any knowledge of storms/hurricanes thought this was gonna be Katrina.

Said who? All I heard in my area were comparisons to hurricanes from 2007 and 2000, which were Cat 1 and 2s. No one I listened to compared it to Katrina.

Again, yes up north it wasn't bad, but North Carolina, VA and MD will be cleaning up for days from the floods and damage.

Sure, that is NY for ya. But, that doesn't take away from the damage in the south. The overreaction to the quake was sad, and funny. Still, it feels like a bad Sci-fi movie called "Hurriquake" as my coworkers called it.
