JFK called Mathews ?? Not surprising. Nappy recently scheduled Jefferson & Edgewood from Ashtabula County for the slaughter and keeps Southview as part of the wimp schedule to beat up on. Nappy never misses a cherry picker game.

Mooney & Ursuline would be a good fit for JFK for local games.

One of the best jokes was a few years ago when Nappy traveled to Western Ohio for a game with Bluffton, while avoiding a local game with Ursuline, searching for another cherry picker. Bluffton spanked them pretty good. That contract didn't last long.

Actually, your post is a little misleading. JFK and Bluffton signed for a two game series and the teams split. The series was MUTUALLY discontinued because of the distance between the two schools.

Hey Genius, have you looked at Mooney's schedule for 2009? It may not be a conference of parochial schools but it was mostly parochial schools:
Columbus DeSales, Elyria Catholic, Mentor Lake, Buffalo St. Francis, Benedictine, St. V's, Ursuline, and Watterson. That's eight out of ten. Then we got to the playoffs and it got easier with your public schools until the final when we had to play DeSales again. Mooney has done quite well the last ten years. How has your public school done?

You know folks, I am reading and reading and reading all these posts and I don't know why. My head is spinning around right now. Everyone has points to be made, but let me tell you a few things. Now try to listen to me without feeling an absolute desire to come on and start with the sarcasm. You see because that is all this thread is.....one sarcastic and bitter remark after another.

First, we as adults do have that right to make decisions that are in the best interest of our children. But I think at times we make decisions that are in our OWN BEST INTERESTS rather than theirs. I say this for one reason. I have an opportunity that I bet many of you do not have. I am a trainer for the House of Speed. I am not going to hide behind a curtain here and act as if I cannot reveal what I do. I would say we have approximately 75 kids at this point that we train on a daily basis. Mostly Mahoning Valley at this point. You know what I love the most? When I have a class with about 25 kids in it, and they are from Canfield, Mooney, Boardman, Poland, and Fitch.

I love it, because I watch them interact with each other. You know what I see. I see young people who get along alot better than we do on this website, on jjhuddle, or out in the real world full of administrative ideas that ruin it for these very young people who I train. I always throw a jab in there at them about where they are from and they laugh. I purposely make them work together because my hope one day is that a new generation gets over themselves and their differences and puts the Mahoning Valley back on the map as one of the best areas to watch a high school football game. You may think we are....we are not. Oh, sometimes we are........like Poland vs. Mooney this year. Did you see that stadium when they played? Did you see the stadium when Boardman and Mooney played? How about Fitch and Ursuline games? Could you imagine Niles and JFK??

We have a junior from Poland who was discussing why they do not play Mooney on a regular basis. His words...."Don't look at us ,(the kids), we will play them in the street if they want to. It's our parents and teachers who cry and whine about this kid and that kid leaving Poland and going to Mooney. My buddy across the street from me goes to Mooney. I have no probelm knocking him on his a** on Friday night and then going over his house on Saturday and playing X-box." Exact words. They all say that. Not once in the hundreds of conversations I have had with these kids have they said..."oh god no....we want no part of them."

You see these decisions....they are for us, not our children. This fear that our kids may get beat on the grid iron so we must schedule around that to avoid the humiliation they will have to go through.....I don't know folks.....isn't losing and than getting back up part of life? I mean that is what I was taught anyway. I didn't play football. But I am friends with alot of guys that did play at Campbell, my Alma Mater, from 85' to 93' when we were able to go toe to toe with Mooney and Ursuline. Thirty guys on our teams. None of them weighed over 220 pounds most of the time. Our lines averaged 190 across the front. I truly believe it is the size of the fight in the dog sometimes. Would Poland beat Mooney 10 times out of ten.....nope. They might only win 2 or 3 for that matter.....but isn't that what its all about . The struggle, and overcoming the odds together.

Thi valley could pack stadiums like no other on Friday nights on a weekly basis. Yet you have things like, "we are not playing Ursuline".....or the Canfield bowing out of the Boardman game incident a few years ago...followed by Boardman and Fitch's craziness to join the Fed league...and their justifications for it. Kicking Campbell and JFK out of the MVC way back and the excuses for it were pathetic. It was because they could not beat us....but they will tell you different.

The public vs. parochial thing is annoying anymore. It will never end, so be it. But if one thing is for sure it is this. This Valley moves nowhere in anything we do. It is nothing but criticism on a consistent basis. We are a negative area, and friday night lights in this valley is just one example of it. Quit worrying about the playoffs already and pack the house with some great rivalries that are sure to produce great upsets on a yearly basis. If you want to get to the playoffs that bad, than win for cryin out loud.

I wonder how the Browns felt last night after beating the Steelers for the first time in 12 tries. Turned a season of ugliness into a bright light for just one moment in time. Had to feel great. I wonder if after the 7th or 8th try they could have petitioned the NFL to tell them we refuse to play Pittsburgh anymore. We can't beat them. Is that what we teach our kids....if you can't beat them...run from them?? Simple question.

Great post! Dead on. Let the kids play. Its usually 3 or 4 stuffed shirts who make decisions for all the kids because of their own ego.

Great post cmhs_pride. What the MVC schools did to Campbell and JFK was very wrong. Those Campbell teams in the late 80's and early 90's were very fun to watch. The 1989 team came up just short of winning the state. They were very tough kids and seemed to have an endless supply of tailbacks over about a 10 year period.

Nice try. Strike three. Move your undersized brain out of the Mahoning Valley. This isn't about the Mahoning Valley. Go to Cleveland and see how many public school teams are lining up to play Iggy or Ed's. Go to Cincy to see how many publics line up to play Moeller, St. X or Elder. Ditto Columbus with DeSales or Watterson. You folks in the parochials with your "best interests" of the kids are now getting it thrown back in your face. The best interests of public schools , who are for the most part limited to the kids found in their community, are not going to be badgered or pressured into playing parochials who are made up of All Star players from MULTIPLE communities from in some cases MULTIPLE counties . Not once have I thrown out the R word. I find it humorous that many, many parochial schools WHO USED TO WIN, now sport losing records. WHY ?? Go look at their schedues. Instead of being scheduled full of public schools they drubbed for years & years under this system, they now get beat up by EACH OTHER, producing losing records and no playoffs. But, its a fair system of like minded schools playing each other-- your muliple community all stars vs our multiple community all stars. Its a fair game. No discussion of who transfered from where. No mention of who gets a scholly paid for to attend the parochial or by whom, not even a discussion of where the kids live that come over from another community or county to attend the parochial. Just one Parochial vs another. You see, you have nothing to sell -- you are bankrupt in your "best interest" arguement. That dog won't hunt anymore. Thats why you aren't getting games and won't be invited to a league. You have to play your own. You have to lose to yourselves or beat up on your selves. Think a generation is going to change back to an unfair system ?? Don't hold your breathe. People aren't that stupid. Now maybe the playoff system with parochials stays unchanged . Maybe. But don't think that the status quo is going to change. The days when a parochial was limited to kids in its town and publics would play you are over . No one is going to use the R word. We'll look at the kids you get from "Saint" Eagle Heights or the 5-8 communities that "feed" the parochial( or the other counties) and say............. great team of college talent you got there. Now go play a like minded school ( hint-- parochial) who was built in the same way.

Meanwhile, the public school kids will play each other in a much more even footing of competition with mostly just kids from the one community. An eyebrow will be raised with a transfer here or there , but for the most part, it will be a game that over the years should be fair & balanced -- we'll win some , we'll lose some . We'll compete for league championships pretty much on equal footing as far as competition goes. Good teams will make the playoffs and may well run into a parochial with its players from 5-8 communities or multiple counties. The public school will try its best. Might win, might lose.

And thats the way it will be. Unless the OHSAA changes the rules. Take that to the bank.

So long as ADULTS use the BEST INTEREST of the kids arguement, just remember, it goes both ways-- you are free to chose a parochial school for your kid. The public school parents are also free to set up their kids sports system & leagues in a fair & balanced competition. You see, the lessons of winning or losing can be arranged in the public schools too. Now , run along and schedule your other parochial brothers and teach your kids about winning & losing. We'll be just fine. Hope you will be too.

If the players from Canfield and Poland want to play Mooney instead of traveling a few hours to play Wooster or Normandy or beating up on poor Youngstown East (cuz THATS fair, right?) why not let them? You have LOTS of PAROCHIAL schools to play and can make a league of parochial schools. Check the North Coast League in Cleveland, or the GCL in Cincy/Dayton. I'm not whining. Lots of public school leagues and tough match ups with good public vs public schools -- Massillon, Glenville, Mentor, Harding, Boardman, McKinley,etc. Ditto the smaller divisions. Whats the matter -- Iggy or Eds got you shaking ?? Its just a game. Iggy , Ed's and Moeller are waiting. A great parochial league is waiting to be built with Mooney, Ursuline, SVSM, Hoban , Walsh, Iggy, Ed's -- like minded schools with kids coming from multiple communities and counties. Its a natural.

It's about trying to form a league with good local matchups. Boardman/Mooney was a good matchup this year, and it has been most years that they played. Poland played Mooney very tough into the 3rd quarter. There are public schools that can compete with the private schools in the area. If you want to look at Iggy's schedule this year it included Glenville, Harding, Massillon, and Mentor. Over the last decade these have been some of the top teams in D1. All have made runs deep into the playoffs and make the playoffs regularly. Those programs play a good team, and it makes them a tougher team. Sometimes a team can become better from a loss. Would you rather go 10-0 and lose in the first round of the playoffs or go 7-3 and make it deep into the playoffs? When I go to playoff games, I root for the Mahoning Valley team. When I watch a sporting event, I really don't sit there and wonder what religion some is. I want to see a good game.

First, for my good friends at JFK, the ones who won't play Ursuline or Mooney in the area "for a good game" -- the Bluffton scores were as follows........... the first year of the contract ( 2004) Bluffton blew out the Eagles 41-13. The second year, a more modest win for JFK, 33-23. But the contract did end. Wasn't the cherry picker Nappy was looking for.

Next -- AL, buddy. Yes a good game is what we are looking for. That why I'm salivating at the chance to see Iggy- Mooney and Ed's - Mooney next year. What great match ups. NEO powers matching up. Sounds to me like Nappy had a transfer from your underachieving team. Funny thing is, before Nap came to JFK all of the publics couldnt wait to get on the phone with the AD to schedule a game. It was a sure win. When things changed the bullys left. I admit JFK cant compete with Mooney or Ursuline because of numbers and size. Its a no brainer. We cant beat them but we admit it. You run because you are afraid to play. Big differance. Boardman and Fitch didnt have the balls to play Harding...so they ran and still cant win. Poland, Salem, Canfield disolved the league opened it back up without offering either. Was JFK dominate in that league? In 92 JFK went 7-3 and all 3 losses were in that league. They won it all as an 8 seed. So quit crying that you may not make it with with a few losses.

It was only a few short years ago that Mooney was 0-10. Would you make your same argument then as you do now? I dont think so. But really, quit playing the games that the kids want to play and dont support THEIR wish but let them keep knocking on doors to sell us their candy bars to support their schools. You are just a bitter guy. Publics get out of leagues or change the name and add who they want. If they cant win they leave again. Usually to a weaker league they can win. So actually many not only run from parochial teams ....They run from each other...Funny!

I'm perfectly happy to leave the publics play each other and form leagues of public schools. I'm asking for nothing from the parochials, but am suggesting that all their whining about getting good games can be achieved in NEO with other parochials. All I'm reading is parochials whining on here to play us, let us in your leagues,yada,yada,yada. You really sound bitter,not me. I'm fine the way things are.

What I'm left with is what you already admitted to -- you are afraid and not willing to play the other parochials in the area. How about Cleveland, Akron & Canton parochials?? You don't need public schools . Lots of teams to play. Form a league. You guys really make yourself out to be quite wimpy, afraid of competition. You need only grow some gonads and do what you will have to do in the end. A 10 game parochial schedule would be easy to do, you wouldn't have to travel to Western Ohio and you could schedule other D-V & VI parochial teams. Seems simple to me. Ditto for Mooney & Ursuline.
