Had that been a slower runner or he was a right handed batter....we would've witnessed the greatest play ever made by a 3rd baseman DAMNIT!

My point is with intelligent play he could have done better than he did.

Stubbs doesn't throw him out at 3rd if he is going full....BUT, if Stubbs catches that ball full momentum ahead and 100% committed to the best throw....the runner may stop part way there in fear of making final out at 3rd.....you gotta at least approach it that way.

Do you think he may have had a better chance whipping it home, a shorter throw his body was in better position to make, and surprising Rasmus at home?

That would have been tough because he'd had to have thrown it on the foul side of home plate.

Luck happens when you give yourself a chance to win.

Same thing for an easy ground-out earlier in the game. Until he changes his mind-set he is not all-star caliber.

I hate the bullshit wrong way crap spinner to maybe win it....but I still can't get over how close Scott Rolen came to making that play. He was playing way over towards SS and got that ball spinning hard 5 feet foul and going away from him and the old guy just damn near missed an ESPY and a stake in the Cards back....damn lefty was the only difference!

I am not nearly as knowing as I think I am....but regardless, I'll never, ever question the insticts of Scott Rolen.

Shouldn't make much difference either way coming in on the foul side or the fair side of the plate.

Strike 3 to Ramon was a bit off the plate, but the 2-1 to Stubbs was way off and he called that a strike too.

Makes a big difference. The runner wad on the foul side of the line. So you have to throw it around him and on a line. Really tough play

Not around him, just a straight shot right past his right hip, and he's on the same side of the plate you are trying to tag him on meaning you don't have to reach top the other side of the plate. that's where the element of surprise comes in, surprise that you are trying to make the play on him and he doesn't have the where-with-all to slide to the other side, and maybe not even to slide at all making it even a more likely play. Yes it is a really tough play, but I think it had more chance. A play similar to that I consider my greatest ever infield play. It is amazing how much time it seems to save getting the throw off not having to turn to get it to first.

Great, great game, and less than a 2.5 hr game. Done in plenty of time to watch the fireworks! Who says 1-0 games are boring?

possibly some good news. Tulo got hurt today, if he has to go on the DL it might pave the way for Janish to the all star game.
