Yeah, good luck to both. Clausen had a helluva year and Tate had a great career at ND. He was a bright spot during a dismal '07 season.

Good luck to both. Both were great players in a bad system with a bad coach. Had a better coach been at ND while they were there, I really wonder what this team could have done. Possibly be undefeated had a better coach been in there.

Both are 1st-2nd round picks.

Just an FYI, there's no concrete news saying Golden Tate is leaving. I know it's wishful thinking on my part but he may be using that presser to say he's staying.;)

Does this make the ND job even less desirable? You already have a terrible defense and now you have to come into an offense that has to replace 2 of it's 3 best skill position players (and the only reason ND went 6-6 and not 2-10). So you come in and struggle in year one (an obvious rebuilding year) and the target is already on your back in year two (See also: Rodriguez, Richard)?

If I'm Stoops or Kelly I'm not sure I want to walk into this quagmire. A more desirable job will come open eventually.

wonderboy02, add this to the fact that Crist will be out until march/april, I think it is going to make this a tough job to walk into.

You're obviously not walking into ND expecting to go 12-0 in your first season. New systems on O and D means you'd likely have a different mindset on who would fit the bill at any given position, Tate and Clausen are losses but not something that would prevent one from accepting the job, by any stretch.

Best of luck to both them at the next level (if Tate goes too)!

The coach may not, but the fans and boosters do. That's the problem.

Especially if it's someone like Kelly who came in with instant success at somewhere like CIN.

Nah, they want it but they're realistic enough not to expect it.

No one is going to expect instant success.

And more times than not, when a coach is fired at a high profile college, it's because the team is bad and isn't improving. So, it's not like Kelly can sit around and wait for a team will a bunch of pieces coming back to step into.

ND's two glaring issues are on defense and the possibility that Dayne Crist will not be ready for the opening game of the 2010 season. Regardless of who the coach is, Weis left the offensive side of the ball in good shape and the defense has a great nucleus to build around in Manti Te'o. IMO, this won't be like the Willingham firing, ND had no depth what so ever and after Quinn's class graduated it started to show. ND has alot of good players waiting to play, enough to get them through the next three years so the new HC can recruit more depth. Also, implementing a new coaches sytem may hinder a few things but not much, these kids are smart or they wouldn't be at ND.
