Go figure. I passed Calc I & II, Stat I & II, but did not know this.

Math minors FTW (have one too, which makes me mixing up e and i on a thread earlier even less excusable)

Dregrees FTW as well

Most (non graphing) calculators default to left-to-right. They don't do order of operations on their own.

My TI-83 comes up with 14. Get a better calculator.

Why the fuck do you have to use a calculator to add/subtract 1 and multiply by 0?

Basic calculators are incapable of doing order of operations, because they process each function of the equation instantly. If you were to use a calculator that is capable of actually looking at the equation as a whole before calculating it (the infamous TI-83s many of us had in college), you'll get the right answer.

Maybe cause they ran out of fingers to use and didn't want to take off their socks to count more than 10?

I actually teach this in 6th grade math, and like many of them I didn't take my time to process what I was looking at and simply gave what appeared to be the easy answer.

Wow! This is a hilarious thread! The one guy who says "there are two answers, either left-to-right, or the REAL answer" made me laugh out loud!

If you didn't realize it was 14 even without using a calculator, you are fuckin' retarded.

Is it safe to say that SOS was the benefactor of an IEP when he was in school?

I thought order of operations got introduced in elementary school once you knew how to multiply and divide...?

When do American schools learn multiplication typically?? I learned multiplication, division and order of operation in 2nd grade when I lived in Germany... and I forget if I relearned it here after that.

Anyways, as people have said. There is only 1 correct answer to this problem. Although the minus sign thrown in all the plus signs is more of a trick and about observation not actual mathematical knowledge.

Pardon me for having a life and not being able to glare at the OC all day. Additionally, it's not my fault you can't do simple math, obviously your parents should have gotten you a math IEP.

Yeah, I don't fault someone's math skills for putting 16. I fault their OBSERVATIONAL skills, but not their math skills.

I remember playing "Around-the-World" with multiplication and division in fourth grade. However, I don't believe we discussed exponents and square roots until maybe 5th grade, which is my guess for order of operations (private school), but then when I transferred to a public school, we learned it again in 7th grade.

In any case, it's not part of higher math or anything.
