Are there really liberals who think a conservative/Republican would force people to go to church? I'm not directing that at you IWP. I heard a couple of people talking today at Chipotle about being worried that Santorum would make everybody go to church. I thought it was comical. I'm more concerned about being told my kid can't have a goldfish or being told what I can eat or what to feed my kids by the government but to each their own.

Oh and I think stlouiedipalma is under playing the power of the mainstream media. There are too many people in this country who watch certain news programs and run with whatever they say or follow a family member's political philosophy without doing their own research. If these people hear about all of the "saintly" work the Democrats are doing and how the Republicans are constantly doing things that hurt the country or how they don't care about certain groups of people of course that is going to present a problem.

I haven't heard anyone say that (though obviously they exist because you witnessed it). That's a bit silly.

My fear is that he will legislate based upon his religious beliefs even when it means harming other people which he's indicated he will do. People who justify policy with religion scare me.

Well I am not too worried Santorum is going to issue an executive order banning anal sex or contraceptives. I'm more worried about other shit he would pull. One branch of the federal government is as powerful as the other two branches let it become. The federal government is as powerful as the people have allowed it to become. Something tells me if Santorum were in the white house Harry Reid would suddenly start caring a little more about the balance of power between the legislative and executive branches of the federal government.

The days of a President directing Congress to do his bidding are long gone. Partisan politics in both chambers and the threat of filibusters have made it almost impossible for a President to push through much of anything. We have seen quite a bit of this in the past 19 years. It began with judicial appointments and now it extends to nearly every proposal made on the Hill. You need a dominant majority in the House and a minimum of 60 votes in the Senate if you want to get things done your way. No matter who wins the Presidency this fall I fear that this trend will continue.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. But you do hit on a key point that the national attention needs to focus much more on the yahoos running amok in Congress. Problem is, not a damn thing I can do about Pelosi or Reid.

Yes they did. They did it on his voting record in the Sentate. He can't defend it. Not some wild ass notion Rick wants to control everyones prick. He had to admit several times he was wrong or he was playing politics. Which I have been saying all along will make conservatives think twice. Will he play politics again? Why wasn't he consistent? Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that three of those people in the debate tonight would secretly like to nuke Tehran. They probably figure that "who would dare do anything to us if we turned Iran into glass?" It's my opinion that they feel that the only way to besure they don't develop a nuke is to show them how several hundred of them work, up close and personal.

What sense would it make for Muslims to nuke Israel and leave their holy sites in Israel uninhabitable for thousands of years? Do you warmongers even think about these things?

I personally think a large part of Iran's wanting the bomb is self preservation.

They saw what happened to Saddam, and probably figure at some point regime change will come to them.

They see NK and Pakistan though able to do what they please without fear of ever being attacked because they have the bomb.

Having the bomb buy's corrupt regimes plenty of peace of mind knowing they won't ever be invaded or a candiate for regime change. I think it is this far more than a desire to blow up Israel (and destroy themselves in the process) that drives them to get the bomb.

You do realize the Muslims (or at least the militant ones) hate Israel because they control some of their most holy places, right? So they would destroy those places just to kill Israelis?

I agree. Its worked great for the North Koreans. They can't feed their own people so they extort from the South, Japan, and US. Now they can even sink ships and shell islands with absolutely no one lifting a finger.

The thing is in this case their are at least four countries that at this point depending on leadership will go to war in one way or another to prevent Iran from having that leverage.
