He's a rapper, not a poet.

Eminem is not a poet, Rakim is not a poet...they are rappers.

This sounds like some PC crap to make someone sound more respectable.

Why don't you post some of his great poetic work then?

just because you are unaware that he is a poet doesnt mean thats they way it is. "Great" is a rather subjective term. I'm willing to bet that you have no particular taste when it comes to poetry, and I doubt you'll like the way he writes. I get it, your upset because an artist you dont like was invited to the white house. If you want to hear his work just look for it. A simple google search should suffice.

Who really cares if he is a poet or not? That is far from the issue. I see both sides of that argument though. I can see where people second guess him being called a poet but I see that it is possible he is a poet on top of being a rapper.

Ignoring the basis of the debate, and looking simply at the arguments on both sides of the issue, O'Reilly was made to look pretty foolish and John Stewart got his points across very well.

This debate goes to Stewart...even if you don't agree with the point he was arguing.

Common is a great person who's helped A LOT of people and is active within communities. Stop being ignorant to the situation.

And let me understand where some of you guys are coming from...

Common isn't a poet because he's black and makes words that rhyme, right? That makes him a "rapper"... You guys don't even know the difference between rap and hip-hop, yet you pass this kind of judgement? SMH.

Every debate between Stewart and O'Reily goes to Stewart. Nothing changes in that regard. Stewart is able to keep his cool while pointing to nothing but facts. O'Reily loses his cool and spits out biased, one sided arguments.

I have to laugh whenever I read people saying that O'Reilly is biased. Do you watch his show or do you just hear that on MSNBC, The Daily Show, or The Colbert Report? The only thing that O'Reilly can be accused of is not letting people talk and that is something he does to people of both parties.

I was wondering how long it would take until someone dropped the race card down on the debate. Pretty sad really. No one is saying Common is a bad person. Defending 2 cop killers isn't right though and therefore I am alright with people pointing this out. I also know the difference between hip hop and rap. I clearly stated that his body of work didn't classify him as a gangster rapper.

like stewart pointed out, he's under the opinion they're innocent. In his mind, they aren't cop killers. If he thought they actually killed them and then defended them would be offensive, but that's not what is going on here.

But here's where judging the merits of each side of this debate becomes sketchy. Is the belief they are innocent rational and justifiable? If so, then I'd agree with Stewart. If not, then I think I go with O'Reilly in that controversial/fringe views shouldn't be validated with a visit to the White House.

Maybe Stewart was baiting him, but also I believe Hurricane was later vindicated.

Otherwise, I agree with others that I don't see the need for a "poetry night", much as I don't see the need for White House all-star basketball games and the like. I respect that the President deserves some R&R, I'd just rather not see everything turned into a PR event (and pretty much all Presidents do this, although Obama seems to have a need to rub elbows with celebs much more than Bush or Clinton).

there is controvert over both arrests. whether or not you interpret the evidence that way is largely based on what the police were willing to release to the public. Mrs. Obama (the one who actually sent out the invites for this event) was not validating anything that Common has written, they invited him because he is a multi-grammy award winning Hip Hop artist, who happens to be pretty god damn intelligent.

There wasn't mass controversy when Jay-Z visited the White House, nor when Bono visited, to get angry because Common got invited is irrational.

I'd say the same thing if I had been paying attention to it.

It's all just PR bullshit I don't really agree with in the first place. Waste of time and money. Unless Bono or whomever wants to pay $10k to stay a night at the White House I really can't justify inviting him in the first place. Not to mention it just cheapens the office. But it's pretty trivial and irrelevant and not a bone I have interest in picking.

Just funny how this thread will fall mostly along political lines. This sort of crap is just that through and through, I don't care if you're Repub or Dem.

My question is where is all some of you guy's outrage and Fox New's outrage at things that conservatively supported musicians say? Where is your outrage over Ted Nugent calling for someone to shoot Obama? Or where was the "poetry nights/musicians shouldn't be at the White House on the taxpayer dime" anger before Obama? Why are you getting angry now and then let's say you happened to not be aware of those other artists being invited to the White House before Obama why when they are brought up do Fox New's/you guys not say "they should not have been invited either"?

It's because this isn't about you disagreeing with Common, it's about you looking for anything and everything to bitch about Obama. I've said it time and time again on here, there's plenty of real stuff happening that you can and should be upset about. This shit isn't an outrage and isn't important at all. They had a poet/musician/whatever that you don't like at the White House who cares?

What does it matter what his political views are? He's not trying to destroy the country, he is attempting to fix the problems that he sees. He believes that two people convicted of murdering police officers are innocent, and he draws inspiration from their stories. This was hardly an issue before Obama was elected, its hilarious that it becomes a big no-no once he steps into office.
