In another rough season as a Mets fan, at least today put a temporary smile on my face :)

Pirates don't let that huge blown lead from yesterday get them down, though, as they beat the Phillies 2-1 in extra innings. Hamels was pretty dominating through eight innings, but Karstens more than held his own and the score was tied 1-1 when both starters were gone. Pirates bullpen did their job and Jose Tabata drove in Xavier Paul to win it off Baez.

Great way to bounce back!

Very nice win. Somehow, someway, the Bucs have the Phils number at PNC lately. Now 7-2 in last 9. Karstens with a gem tonight.

Pirates beat the Phils again, this time 6-3 in front of the largest crowd in PNC Park history. Charlie Morton continues his unbelievable season. The Bucs win the series and go for the sweep and another chance to reach .500 tomorrow, which will be difficult with McDonald going against Halladay

Never say die, GoPens! Karstens vs. Hamels was a huge mismatch on paper, but our dude held his own and the team won!

This is fun to actually care about current baseball instead of what might happen in the next couple years. The offense is picking up and the pitching has been very solid. Both sides get on the same page and this team could actually be good.

Agreed it's fun to care about current baseball instead of the future, but...Monday is the draft and the Pirates have the No. 1 pick. The Post-Gazette today came out and said that the Pirates are going to pick Garrit Cole, the firethrower from UCLA. Personally with all the pitching picks over the last couple of years, early on I wanted them to take Anthony Rendon the 3rd baseman from Rice, but there's too many questions surrounding his health. I'd rather have an everyday player than one who goes out every 5th day and with one twinge of his elbow can be done, but I guess you can't have enough pitching.

I agree. I'd prefer Rendon, but if they have concerns about his health, I can understand why they'd go after Cole.

And in happy news, Neil Walker made Roy Halliday his bitch. Two-run homer in the first to give them a 2-0 lead. Xavier Paul, so far, is looking like a great waiver pick-up. He led off the inning with a single and is red-hot at the plate right now, batting .318.

McDonald had major control issues in the fourth. I have no clue how Philly only got one run out of this:

- C. Utley walked
- C. Utley to second on wild pitch
- R. Howard walked
- C. Utley to third, R. Howard to second on passed ball
- R. Ibanez hit sacrifice fly to deep center, C. Utley scored, R. Howard to third
- C. Ruiz hit by pitch
- D. Brown singled to second, C. Ruiz to second
- W. Valdez grounded into double play second to first, D. Brown out at second
- End of Inning (1 Run, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

McDonald completely lost it and walked the first three batters he faced in the fifth. Resop in to try to not let this inning turn into a disaster.

Could have been worse, should have been better.

The one-out sac fly by Howard to tie the game at 2-2...perfectly understandable.
The two-out run scored on a HBP...FFFFFUUUUUUU!!!!!!!

Up to 5-2 now, as the Phillies scored off both Meek and Ascanio (who needs to disappear...he seems to give up a run every time out). Only real hope comes from how Halliday has 114 pitches, so should be leaving the game soon. Since they haven't hurt him since the first inning, anything besides him would be better than him.

Pirates take Cole. Hope he doesn't turn out to be the next Bullington. Actually I like the pick. It's a safe pick, Rendon was just too risky with his injury history. Now the fun begins. He's a Boras client.

When did Rendon get picked? I was watching the Reds game tonight and early on, they showed the top five picks and he wasn't one of them. The Yahoo mock I saw had the Pirates taking Cole and the next team taking Rendon, but things didn't work out that way for him.

Rendon went 6th to Washington. If he remains healthy, it could be a steal for the Nats. Their 3 big draft in a row. Although they have to keep dealing with Boras with all these high picks.

Pirates score 5 in the 8th to beat the Diamondbacks 8-5. Overbay had a bases clearing double to drive in the 3 go-ahead runs. Back to a game under .500. That usually means they lose the next one but I'll be optimistic this time and say they do it tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be interesting. The longest-tenured Pirates pitcher in Maholm takes on the guy who would be their longest-tenured pitcher if he hadn't been non-renewed after last year in Duke.

Tonight was a great rally. Hudson from Arizona probably is looking for a bar fight to release frustrations right now. Seven strong innings, only one earned run combined with two unearned runs due to an early error and a complete meltdown by a reliever who'd had like a 1.5 ERA entering tonight.

Kudos to the Pirates for making the win happen. When 3-1 turned into 3-5 and Hudson was mowing them down, it looked like a sure loss. And then the eighth inning came. One hit after another capped with Overbay's three-run double.

McCutchen with a walk off home run in the bottom of the 12th and the Bucs win3-2 and hit .500!! Arizona scored in top of 10th but Walker with another big RBI to tie it up. If you go to a game you definitely don't want to leave early with this team.

Great win tonight. I don't have confidence in Karstens mustering two straight 7ish inning starts, but after 12 tonight, that'd be great!

One worrisome deal is the catching position. Right now, Chris Snyder (#1), Ryan Doumit (#2) and Jason Jaramillo (#3) are all hurt.

That means career minor leaguer Dusty Brown (note: this might not be his actual name, it's just what entered my mind) and newly called-up Wyatt Toregas (who played 19 games a couple years back for Cleveland) are the two options. With Eric Fryer at AAA if needed. He's an Ohio State graduate, but I don't know that he's actually looked at as a prospect or anything more than "one potential back-up to Sanchez down the road".
