Maybe the Big East and Big Ten should do a challenge for the first game of the year. I've always thought that would be a cool thing.

It definitely wasn't their performance in big games haha. Penn St lost both big games on their schedule and scheduled freaking Eastern Illinois.

Iowa had to block 2 FGs to beat Northern Iowa (of DI-AA)

Personally I think the Big East is better, and if you want proof, well the Big East had a better Bowl record last year.

And for those that think Penn State and Iowa have these great defenses, what makes you think that? The entire Big 10 is pathetic offensively (other than maybe Purdue), so obviously the entire conferences defensive statistics are going to be inflated.

Match up the top 5 teams vs. the top 5 from the Big East and the Big East wins.
Right on. I laugh when someone who roots for a Big 10 school writes off a Big East school.

True. Although this year I think they could surprise people in the Bowl season. There are some solid teams at the top IMO. Just my opinion, I know a lot of people don't think so... but we'll see I guess.

I think it's close. But I'd have to go with the B10 because of depth.

Iowa's and Penn State's defensive numbers come from playing in an offensively inept Big Ten. I really believe that Cincy would beat either by at least 10 points.

What do you mean? The Big 10 is better because they have more teams?

46-13- Big Ten- Average SOS: 70.8
45-14- Big East- Average SOS: 70.2

Overall Big East SOS average- 57
Overall Big Ten SOS average- 60

It's pretty even, this season.

Problem is, you can't just say that one conference is better than the other because of one season. It's about consistency, which the Big East hasn't had.

The Big East has been solid for the last few years, but until they can do it consistently, they will be inferior.

What about Rutgers?

Howard, Texas Southern, Army and Florida International...

You can say bad things about both conferences having crappy schedules.

Unfortunately, the only thing consistent about the Big Ten is getting blown out in the bowl season.

Rutgers isn't being considered as a potential BCS bowl candidate.

Oh, but UC's offensive numbers couldn't have came from a defensively inept Big East?

I don't understand the double standard.

If you want to compare both conferences this year, they are identical. The Big Ten is defensive, and the Big East is offensive.

No doubt the conferences are pretty close.

However, it's not about consistency. It's about this year. That's what I'm talking about at least. I'm not talking about over the last decade. I don't get your logic.

+1 haha. Amazing, I was going to say the same thing. Yes Rutgers schedule is laughable, but at the same time they aren't being put up as a candidate to play in a BCS game

But Rutgers was the "best" defense that most of those teams in the Big East played, partly due to 4 give me games.

dabrowns, you make a good point about one conference being inept offensively and the other defensively.

So if the SEC has a down year next year, and the Big Ten has a better year are we going to start saying that the Big Ten is better than the SEC?

I rest my case.

It's about consistency.

That "defensive" mindset hasn't been working for the conference during the past 2-3 seasons of OOC play and bowl appearances. Hopefully the Big 10 will adapt a little bit and get out of the dark ages.

Problem is, our defense has been excellent.... to Big Ten offenses.

Our defense looks lost when it goes against a speedy, complex offense, which is Ohio State's problem.

We're not used to getting multiple looks on offense, and having QB's who can run circles around so many teams in the nation.

The last time our defense was truly good enough to stop even the most elite offenses was earlier in the decade.

UC certainly didn't have any problem hanging half a century on the only big ten opponent they played, which is A) The most points scored on Illinois all year, & B) The second most points Cincy scored all year.
