He had no legal requirement to keep any of that email confidential . . . . none.

The lawyer in question was not with the FBI, nor was he a prosecutor . . . . he was a former Buckeye player who has had his law license suspended in the past.

The lawyer didn't even mention confidentiality until the second email.

Tress responded to the emails by making statements that he was looking into or taking action on the matter . . . and he clearly forwarded it . . . both of which don't mesh with his stated fear and respect for the confidentiality of the communication.

Tress was the Athletic Director at YSU for years, he is clearly aware of the chain of command for reporting things like this at a university.

He covered this up so his guys remained eligible, and then lied to OSU when asked about it directly in December.

I'm a Ytown native, Cbus resident and OSU fan . . . but he screwed up big-time and needs to step down before the university is embarrassed further.

This ain't Auburn, this ain't Bama, this is Ohio State.

The only thing that could possibly make sense is that they want this to end with Tressel getting nailed because if the NCAA gets in there they will find that this Rife guy was paying players cash and a lot more than the idiot 5 are involved and if discovered it will bring down the program.

Of course if it is that deep, why self report this shit at all? No one was going to find out about the emails if Ohio State didn't start investigating this months ago. I'm stumped again.

I posted the same thing earlier in this thread. In my mind, no way did Tress not forward those emails on. He's falling on the grenade for the good of the program and University.

The NCAA has been in already with the initial report of the 5 players. I am sure they look into thinsg very closely then. So I highly doubt that your above scenario is true. On top of that, if that was the case, I think all of those players would have BOLTED to the NFL knowing that it was possible that more could have been found out.
I still believe there is more to this that we do not know. I am not sure we will ever know. I don't believe Tressel forwarded these emails to Smith or anyone within OSU. I think if he did forward, it was to another lawyer, maybe a personal one who gave him advice.
And again, I keep hearing that he "knew" about this in April, and willingly played players he knew were ineligible. I doubt this. Again, how often do coaches get some kind of info about their players doing this or that? Its hearsay. They would then look into it, investigate it themselves. Maybe Tress called in the players, asked them about it, and they denied it, so he moved on. Maybe he knew the credibility of Cisero(sp)? and didn't think there as anything to it, so he just played along with the emails. I have no idea. We could come up with a thousand scenarios of speculation here.
I just think there is a lot more to the story...maybe enough to support Tressel, maybe enough to want him fired and out. And I doubt that we will ever know everything.

I really do not understand why Tressel did not reply to the E mail with a simple request to forward the confidential Email to Gene Smith if the request is denied,Tress is covered, if the request is granted he is again cleared.

With the disclosure of the lawyers name, do you think that he will be charged with any crimes for disclosing private information to Tressel about his client and if he implicates Tressel in other violations in a plea bargain will OSU be pressured to fire him?

I don't claim to have any connections.This is a forum and everyone can post whatever they want.I bet if I said that I heard from someone in Columbus that Tressel was innocent and this was just a big joke played on everyone by OSU and they are going to announce today that this was just a study conducted by the Phychology Department, you would think that my cousins sisters friends boyfriends dog was great.I don't need someone else to tell me that he broke the rules of the NCAA and his OSU contract without any concern for anything but his job.

Tressel is one of the most respected coaches in the country, with one of the elite jobs, and one could argue has more power than the AD himself; yet we are supposed to think he would give himself a black eye? Tressel sells books about how clean his image is, no way he is taking the fall for anyone.

We went back and watched the presser yesterday in class. When Tressel was asked if he had forwarded/sent the email to anybody else he clearly shook his head before Gene jumped in and stated that he wasnt able to answer that question.

That stumps me as well. I was listening to talk radio all day yesterday and heard both Robinson and Wetzel (Yahoo authors) on different programs, and they both were REALLY curious about JT's answer and Gene Smith's cutoff to that question. The other end of those forwarded email(s) will answer a lot of questions and probably raise a lot more too.

I can understand Tressel's dilemma in April, but his neglect in December is what's hurting him and stumping me the most.

I know a lot of my fellow Buckeye fans were getting quite emotional when somebody suggested the regular season could be vacated, but according to an attorney who represents schools who face sanctions... he thinks there is a very real possibiity that we get each game (except for the Sugar Bowl) vacated.

Since 2006, the NCAA has sanctioned 27 schools for violating bylaw 10.1, which requires coaches and others to be truthful and forthcoming about possible NCAA violations. Of the 12 coaches involved, only one kept his job. The others either resigned or were fired by their schools.

I think the punishment was probably a little too lenient. Obviously the NCAA will tack some on, but I wouldn't be so sure that he survives this. I think sharks are starting to circle and if more comes out, I wouldn't be surprised to see him walk away.

There is no criminal statute for violating attorney/client privilege. That would be handled by the state bar.

I don't know what will end up happening or coming out, but the precedent has been set for coaches/programs who have a 10.1 violation. A lot of people are dismissing just how serious the violation is and that it very well could end up costing him his job. I agree about the sharks circling, the ONLY people I have seen defending Tressel have been OSU fans which I don't have a problem with and would expect. But its not like every OSU fan is on board with the support, including many on here. I haven't seen one media member say anything other than Tressel and/or OSU screwed up.
