Obviously those are for meetings behind closed doors, but I don't know if Gene Smith really knows what their response will be. If they are all really upset, that could force Tressel's hand. However, if they don't have a problem with it, then Tressel is back game 3, pending the NCAA decision.

Heard RichRod on the Collin Cowherd show today. He was actually pretty supportive of Tressel. He obviously thinks he made a mistake. But he said in all his dealings, and recruiting against OSU, he believe Tressel tries to do things the right way. Said Tressel/OSU never recruit negatively by bashing other school/coaches. He said there is a big gap between the NCAA, the institutions and athletic programs that needs to come together. All in all, he said he belives Tressel to be a good guy, trying to do things the right way, and made a mistake. Said he doesn't believe Tressel was trying to gain any kind of on the field advantage by doing what he did.
He said the frustrating thing about NCAA is that he knows many/most coaches try to do the right thing, make a mistake, get caught and get hammered. And he said there are those who are outright cheating, and get away with it. He did say, the first thing he and most coaches would do if something like this comes across their desk, is to talk with the players. Then the decision to move forward after that. But he said if Tressel was protecting his players from something, he said most coaches would always stick their neck out for their players/family.
It was interesting listening to what he had to say and a bit surprising in his support of Tressel.

For the record: Most OSU fans haven't given JT a total pass on this. Most of us have condemned him for his (apparent) stupidity in not shooting that first e-mail to someone higher up on the food chain.

That said, looking at the man as a complete individual, all the good he's done in society and with young men, most of us don't believe this falls in the category of get rid of him now. As for the talking heads: who cares what they say? They aren't trying to be logical or rational; they just want ratings or subscribers to increase.

I wonder this all the time. I can't figure out why Buckeye fans are so concerned whether others like Ohio State or despise them.

Really good post. When you take a step back, I think you do realize Tressel is a good man who tries to do the right thing most often.

Exactly...and he is human, and far from perfect. The issue is, he has that clean cut persona..and many cant' stand it and feel he is a fake. Thus when something like this or other issues arise, they attack that "character". I believe most coaches are similar (not all) in that they are in coaching for the right reasons and try to do the right thing. But many don't have that clean cut, senator look that Tressel has. So its more acceptable when they get into trouble.

But how clean cut is his persona? I understand he says all the right things, writes all the books and all the other stuff that Gee and Smith mentioned during his "public reprimand" Tuesday night. The 3 most high profile players at OSU under Tressel have all been suspended for NCAA violations and there have been numerous other issues as well. That is overlooked because he writes the Winners Manual and goes to church? All the stuff he does in the public eye is great, but what is he really doing when no one is looking?

I think that could be said for MANY people, couldn't it though? JoePa has had large number of players in trouble with the law the past 6-8yrs. Urban Meyer as well. Does that make them bad people? You can only control your players so much. In this day and age, if your a head coach a major program...you'll never be perfect and your players will never be able to stay out of trouble completely. It is what it is. 100+ players...odds are that every year someone or more will be in trouble with the law. Probably many get away with crap and dont' get caught. I am sure great coahes have done things, never got caught.
Personally, as mentioned, I think Tressel is a good man. What he has done for people of all ages, the university, etc, etc...far outweighs the negative. But those are on news worthy...only the negative. I met him, he seemed very genuin. I met him at childrens hospital visiting with cancer kids. I was impressed. I know many do this, but in talking with those at hospital..he goes above and beyond. Again, those things are rarely on tv/ in media.
Charlie Weis is a good man. If you read up on him, he has done some unbelievable things behind the scenes. But what did many see on TV? Arrogance, flashing his rings, etc, etc.
Who knows....only those who really know these people, know who they really are.

And I don't disagree with that at all. Never thought that myself. And I happen to think there are FEW that are squeaky clean. As you go through life, you realize this. A lot of good people...few great people you come across.

I agree with this. I dont think anybody is though.

Personally, I think if the NCAA were to take a close look at every major program they would find some sort of violation.

I'm not surprised at all he is supportive. Despite what took place on the field, I truly don't think RRod is as bad of a person as he was made out to be. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Here's what resident "expert" Bryan Burwell is saying in this morning's St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Burwell conveniently leaves out a lot of the story and his commentary suggests that Tressel's punishment is complete. I sent both Burwell and the P-D mail to protest his revisionist view of this story. I don't mind everyone jumping on the "Crucify Ohio State" bandwagon, but they need to report all of the facts, not just the ones which suit their commentary.

That's interesting. I remember JT sticking up for (or at least not bashing) Rich Rod after the whole Michigan-practicing-too-much thingy.

You're probably right. I never really had any opinion of him before he left WVU, but the way he left there always clouded what I thought of him.

I used to like RichRod due to the fact that WVU is a team I pull for when they are not playing OSU. Then he "did them dirty" and went to Michigan(who I obviously hate). That being said, I don't agree with everything he did but I also don't think he was very bad person.

Unfortunately that is what many will remember about him. He has said he wishes he could do it over again.

Some people on here think he is God Almighty when it come to OSU.The biggest thing is that OSU won Championships before he blessed OSU with his Holiness and OSU will win many more Championships when he is gone.Ohio State attracts some of the best athletes in the country to their school because of what the are and the history that goes with the school,not because of Tressel.They will always win games.

Personally I think RR had to leave for the $ and he never stood a chance at UM and was a horrible hire IMO. He has never taken over a team who does not run "his offense" and won in the begging years. He did not get enough time and I truly think the off the field issues were a huge reason why he did not get another year.
