I like those too, however almonds apparently have enzyme inhibitors.

Not much for natural sciences. What does that mean?

Unsprouted nuts and seeds (and legumes as well) contain high levels of Pyhtates, which are not digestible by human beings. This is the only natural defense for them to preserve their ability to reproduce (not allow their seeds to be destroyed by consumption). They tend to strip away important nutrients from other foods and inhibit them from being used by the body. IMO, this is a valid idea, but it's also extremely overblown. Eating raw almonds or other nuts isn't that bad. The problem becomes when someone is using nuts, seeds and legumes as a staple in their diet. Those people are not only dealing with this, but they are likely deficient in other nutrients (vegans/vegetarians).

My advice would to be buy raw nuts, seeds and legumes, sprout and/or soak them...and then consume. You will greatly reduce or even eliminate any ill-effects from the Phytic Acid.

I couldn't stand the bitter taste. I've only had them once. Baked in olive oil.

I actually burnt these a tad and a few of the burnt leaves fell off in the olive oil. Tasted like a potato chip.

I've found a great source of bacon. I eat bacon and brussel sprouts at least once a day, if not twice. Incredible.

This is the original health/exercise thread. If anything, the posts in ETB's threads should be transferred to this one.

Anyway, I don't know if i ever got an answer since my thread was deleted before I had a chance to read BR's post, however BR/AZ i was wondering about farmer walks.

What kind of an approach are you supposed to take? Heavy weights for shorter distance walks, or slightly lighter for longer distance walks? Are both acceptable?

I did a little reading and in the strongman competition, the hardest would be doing 200ft, but including a 180 degree turn at 100ft. Basically, a there and back scenario.

Still waiting on BR and AZ since they would be able to give a better insight other than what I read.

I guess the first thing I'd ask would be what would be your reason for doing them? If it's for cardio, I'd much rather use a weighted vest or more extreme, pull a sled. From someone with a bad knee, trying to do even moderate weight in a farmer's walk for distance isn't really worth it. I'd rather go short and intense, as heavy as possible, and then move on.

If you're going to implement farmer's walk, I'd go as heavy as you can for as long as you can. I'd say most people who have never done them, are going to see their grip strength give out well before anything else fails. I had mentioned in the other thread, when I'm going as heavy as I'm capable of (120's in each hand is the most I've done, that's the heaviest dumbbells my gym has), I'll use straps. At that point, you're obviously not working grip much, but for the forearms, traps, shoulders and back, you're getting a lot of bang for the buck as well as some decent cardio. For grip, I'll put two 45's on a barbell and do Barbell walks without straps. I get some strange looks when I'm walking about the block or down the street carrying a barbell, but whatever.

Some of the strongman events are crazy. We're talking 300 lbs per hand, which is going to include an initial dead lift from the floor (at least once, possibly more if your grip gives), walking for distance, a complete 180 which is an extreme load on the lower body and back having to turn and then another walk for distance back. It looks so simply when watching on TV but man, crazy.

It's sad that this has to be asked three times before a response can be received due to one guy jacking off to his mod abilities. Every time he gets involved it turns a thread of mostly good conversation to shit.

Anyway, thanks for your response Az. I've only been a reader up to this point, but when actual conversation is allowed to be had I find it very beneficial. We have a track upstairs at the UK gym and I think I might add a farmers walk into my workout, solely for strength, not cardio. I'm guessing my back/bi day would be the best place for it?

I'd do it on dead lift/squat or legs day. You're going to still hit some shoulders and traps, but if you have any soreness or are still recovering from a leg day, farmer's are going to suck!

Over the long haul, I just think it's more convenient. On weekends when we do our grocery shopping, it's usually just vegetables, etc. We just have to go to the freezer for dinner unless I want chicken, turkey or fish. I'll probably pick up some bison when I pick up the pork.
