Underwhelmed at the moment. I didnt even bother giving an opinion the last 2 years because I didnt want to pass judgment on his team when they were so devoid of anything resembling talent.
But this year I thought they couldve been a UofM and they havent been. They have been bad...but I also expected our 7 footer to be eligible and for Creek to be healthy and productive. I hate, hate, hate his substitution patterns. I hate the stupid dribble drive offense he runs. I cant stand his choice to play zone at the wrong time. I just really hate a lot of what he does in game. I mean today Johnson goes down with 2 fouls and heads to the bench. WHY ON EARTH do you now choose to go zone. My dad and I were so pissed and promptly T. Johnson hits 2 threes before DJ Byrd hits one. It was like...DUH wtf did you think would happen. Why was verdell Jones on Moore at times tonight? Why does Daniel Moore or Bobby Capobianco even play, let alone when the game is tight?
I hate how a guy is playing well, Victor Oladipo, and at the next whistle is "tired" and on the bench. Crean just does....ugh, so many things that I look at as a coaches son of 2 generations and wonder how he got to the level hes at lol. He refuses to abandon the dribble drive offense, despite we have NO ONE who can execute it.
I realized about 6 games ago that this team is less talented than I originally thought they would be, despite the emergence of Hulls, Oladipo, and Sheehey, so I am going to hedge my comments for about another 9 or 10 months. We will have a line-up with more talent and not full of underclassmen. I still dont think the offense will look like much, because we still wont have any dribble drive players, but we add the most important piece to what this team lacks, a true post presence.
If they dont make the NIT with ease next year, my head might explode. 3 years of painful basketball has been tough enough, I cant go through a season of bad basketball when I expect to be pretty good.
Now, 2012...we better be top 4 AT WORST in the Big Ten. That team is going to be loaded, and the true talent on the team (ie NBA players) will not HAVE to start, though they might. We will have the upper classmen to go along with the young guns, and have the depth should we need it.
Basically, to completely sum it up, Im completely underwhelmed by Creans coaching this year. I love his recruiting and his enthusiasm and all that. He gets Indiana and respects the history etc. But his coaching I have questioned more than Mike Davis, which says a lot. But I think his offense can work with the right players...and we dont have that yet, so I am still, grudgingly, going to wait to judge him till he has guys who can actually compete game in game out in the Big Ten.
