Don't get a high interest loan. Find a $300-400 beater you can pay cash for. Use it and save up some money. Then find a car you can buy with the cash you have saved. Keep you eyes open ask friends co-workers, etc if the or a family member have a car they are looking to sell.

You cannot finance yourself out of a situation that finances got you into.

Be patient, swallow your pride, and get on a cash basis for your transportation needs.

I have not had a car loan since 1991. I own 5 cars which were purchased used with cash.

Where are you in NC? Down here on South Blvd in Charlotte and out in Monroe is a place called iCarsNow. Its probably like a JD Byrider place, the website has this on it:

"Here at icarsnow, your job is your credit. We specialize in dealing with people that have good credit, bad credit or trying to get credit established. Please contact us with any questions or concerns."

I'm in the Raleigh area.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I currently have a Honda Accord with 233,000 miles on it. I have about driven it until the wheels fall off, almost literally. I am not too proud to drive a junker as I have most of my life. To be honest, I think that $4,000 is pretty modest. I do need something reliable as I drive about 25 miles (40 min) each way. Contrary to what someone stated before, I do need a car to get to work. I am not in an area of public transportation and I don't have coworkers that live anywhere near me.

I was hoping to find an independent company to loan me the money for a couple of reasons. There are a few vehicles for sale by owner. And, if I have the money before going to the dealership, I feel I have the upper hand a little.

Thanks for the responses.

Well, I think even though you can't change the past, others can learn from you. I would never marry anyone without running a credit check on them. That's my advice now.

If you have to run a credit check on a woman, you shouldn't even marry her.

Had a buddy who got engaged, but refused to set a date until she got her credit up.

When she defaulted on a CC after that, he broke it off.

This. My wife and I checked our credit together before getting married. We had little credit history at the time, but what we had was good.

true love is hard to find. sometimes you think you find true love until you discover that your fiance has a poor credit score.

My fiancee has an 800+ combined credit score but 190k in student loans, which would you rather have?

Having seen pics of your fiancee, I would take the 190k in student loans.
