I volunteered at the World Beer Festival in Cleveland yesterday as a server. Fucking awesome. I worked the Magic Hat stand most of the day. Had the #9 (everybody knows about), Dream Machine, Elderberry, and Single Chair (reminded me of bud light, tbh). Also got stuck on the Ithaca brewing stand for a while. Had the Green Trail and Apricot Wheat, and enjoyed both. Also had some Thirsty Dog...forget the name, but apparently you can only get it specially made from the brewery. Really strong. Also Sierra Nevada Kellerweis and some other brand that is escaping my mind right now. Got to serve drunk people all day, get drunk for free, and took home a 6 mixer of Magic Hat and a 6 mixer of Ithaca. Wish I would have had the chance to try some more, but overall very fun day.

Was back home in Youngstown for the weekend and opened up the fridge in the basement to find a 4 pack of Dogfish Head Punk, a bomber of Heavy Seas Greater Pumpkin, and 4 loose Thirsty Dog 12 Dogs of Christmas. Asked my mom where they came from and she said that they were mine that I had bought and never brought back to Cincy with me. I apparently have a bad habit of buying beers while I'm there and forgetting them when I leave. So I remembered this time and have all of them waiting for me to bust open tonight.

Hope they still taste OK.

Well the top 2 beers, for me, at the Jungle Jim's Beer Fest were...

...Avery Rufus Corvis and the Abita Pappy Van Winkle Porter. Yes Abita, yes the same makers of Purple Haze. The same Abita that I don't even try thier products. Huge surprise for me.
The Avery was a great sour. It might have been the only sour at the Fest. The person serving it said that Ohio only got 8 cases of it.
The Abita was boozy and rich and I love every drop of it. I had a few of these both nights.

What surprised me the most was how great our Local Brewers beers were. Most of my top rated beers were theirs.


MadTree - Galaxy High IPA was great and it has been a while since I saw this on tap. Their Porkopolis was a very nice smoked beeer.
Mt Carmel - The had an Imperial IPA that was pretty damn good. Might have been the best beer I every had from them. Actually it was the second best now that I think about. Took a back seat to BOS which I haven't seeen in over a year (Bourbon Orage Stout that might make a comeback) They also had a Coffee Brown that was very nice. Great balance and drinkable.
Rhinegeist - Relative Truth IPA. This is a re-hopped version of their Truth, arguably the best IPA in Cincy. This beer was flat out hoppy and awesome.
Blank Slate - Barrel Aged Pitter Patter. A BA Belgian Pale Ale. Imagine a 'session' BA beer and that's exactly what it tastes like. Little bourbon and the beer still shines. This Brewer, Scott, is way out there when it comes to his beers and they work !!!
50West - One Way Street:Cascade. Their One Way Street American IPA with Cascade Hops. This was good. Better than thier Amarillo hopped version that I've had before.

Although not Local, a couple of Ohio breweies that scored high with me was Fat Heads Sorcerer and Jackie O's Oil of Aphrodite. Both were excellent beers that I never had before.

Biggest disappointment ??? Probably the North Coast Anniversary XXV. It was a saison which I didn't care for. When I think North Coast I think Old Raspy and Old Stock Ale. This light bodied thing threw me for a loop.
It could have the Breckenridge 72 Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout too. This was just too thin for an Imperial Stout.

All in all a good time and I didn't get shit faced either night...until after I got home and hit the White Rajahs and Two Hearteds pretty hard.

I had a friend in school, her step-dad was the sheriff. She and her boyfriend were put on stings (not sure if right word) while they were underage, going into random places trying to buy alcohol. No way in hell I buy a random kid the goods.

That was the first thing I thought of after he asked me. Granted, this was Main Street Columbus so I'd hope the police in the area would have better things to do than try to fish for lawbreakers at a Kroger.
