Word from all of the people in Smithville is that they are going to run wild over everyone in the WCAL. Take a stroll back on this thread and every Smithville guy on here has been saying it. It wouldn't be possible that anyone from Smithville would be blowing smoke.......would it?

Obviously don't take my word for it, but I heard it was going to be a dedication issue. Said some of the key kids just don't want it bad enough. I don't know if that means weightroom attendance is down or if people aren't showing up for the "voluntary" summer workouts. Still, in the good years at Smithville, that will to win was probably the biggest asset, as Smithville was rarely the biggest or fastest team out there.

Smithville had 40+ tonight at voluntary team conditioning. I don't know how that compares to the other schools as far as dedication is concerned. Just an FYI in response to the previous posts.

What exactly is a voluntary workout? I thought those were held in the winter, not during the prime months....

that's what I was thinking - "voluntary" summer work outs? No such thing when I played. In my experience, if you had 40 guys at a summer work out in late July - you had 40 guys on the football team.

I'm pretty sure it's a rules thing.
You can't hit in pads before such an such a date
You can't have mandatory practices until a certain time
and so on and so on......

rules, rules and more rules, probably a good thing in the sense it stops some programs from practicing year round.

not sure if I'm right....but thats my take.

Yes a "coach" can only spend a specified number of days with the players during the summer. Camps and 7 on 7's count as those days. "Optional" practices/conditioning don't count against those days.

i understand what both of you are saying but I also know that coaches know who is there at the "optional" workouts.

From June 1 to July 31, OHSAA allows 10 coaching days. Lifting, conditioning & agility do not count as coaching days. No school can have mandatory practice until August 1st (Monday). That date changes each year. Do coaches judge kids based on their participation throughout the summer? Dang right they do. As they should.

Guys, we all know that "voluntary" or "optional" doesn't actually mean that they're voluntary or optional. That was why I used quotation marks.

thedemoralizer, I used to be from there. Long time ago.

Tonight 12:01 am Rittman will kick off their two a day practices. At the stadium and open to the public. Heard it went over pretty well where Dennis used to coach

Since Rittman has a new coach I figure they will have a new helmet design.... Any help from the Rittman people would be great!

those are probably the top two, but others are rittman - chippewa (hasn't meant much recently bu they have played over 1oo times I believe). Norwayne has rivalries with its neighbor schools rittman, smithville, northwestern. You could list a few others as well but I don't think any have the mutual dislike of dalton and smithville.
