Yeah, this is the part I just find ridiculous in the conversation. There's no problem with the rule.
Well yeah,... there is. First of all, it is a non reviewable call on a scoring play. Second, the runner is at jeopardy for trying to to get out of the endzone without the benefit of knowing necessarily that his forward progress will be marked past the goal line. Third, the defense can be awarded points for sloppy tackling or chicanery.
What's ridiculous is that some apparently consider the NCAA rulebook to be as inviolate as the U.S. Constitution....when in fact it is changed and added to almost every year in response to situations that come up. If there is an opportunity to improve a rule it should be considered. Whether a rule is "ok" or a situation might only occur "once in a thousand games" is not an excuse to turn a blind eye and leave it alone. Why would you want to? The outcome of a major game was nearly changed because of a bad call...and by rule, they were obligated to follow through. There is certainly something about that ruling that could be improved.
