No no...we're on the same page. I was just saying that there are certain players out there - like for example Owens - who may sign that 3-4 year contract, but be gone in 1-2 years. Yes, overpaying slightly for Edwards is okay, and I think the possibility is very real with other potential players out there.

Also, they haven't been mentioned, but what about Dawan Landry or Michael Huff?

If you think about it, this happens EVERY year. Teams like the Redskins, etc have the "young bull syndrome" while other teams (Browns included with this regime) are more like the "old bull." They are methodically waiting to swoop in on their targets at their price.

Right on. You never see the Patriots, Colts, Packers, etc. blow their load on FAs.

Another thing that favors Philly landing Babin is that the Eagles new DL coach is Babin's former coach in TN.

No surprise here...

Adam Schefter
Browns releasing QB Jake Delhomme; he would like to continue playing.

I don't know who out there would sign him though. The only logical fit is Denver, where he'd be reunited with Jon Fox. I'd prefer a Jim Sorgi or Bruce Gradkowski over Delhomme.

Hmmm...no mention of the Browns?

7/27/2011: CAPLAN: Ray Edwards and the Eagles? Posted 7/27/2011 11:29:00 AM Edwards and the Eagles?: While listeners of 97.5 the Fanatic continue to ask about the possibility of DE Ray Edwards (Minnesota Vikings) signing with the Eagles, sources continue to say that the team is not expected to pursue the veteran defensive lineman.

The reason? Edwards simply is expected to command more money than the Eagles have budgeted for the position. The talented sixth-year defender could yield as much as $8 million or more in a deal elsewhere. Some sources believe the logical landing spots for Edwards include the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.

The Atlanta Falcons, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, had targeted DE Charles Johnson, who wound up agreeing to re-sign with the Carolina Panthers.

It’s widely expected that the Eagles will sign DE Jason Babin (Tennessee Titans) to be part of the expected four-man rotation at the position. However, two local reports out of Chicago say the Bears are expected to pursue Babin as well. Some personnel sources believe that if the Eagles fail to sign Babin, the team could consider signing his ex-teammate with the Titans, Dave Ball, who, like Babin, had a career season under new Eagles defensive line coach Jim Washburn last season.

Consider the source. No one expects the Browns to do anything during the offseason. It's what everyone around the league is use to and the media as well.

When Heckert was asked in this afternoon's presser whether they were targeting any free agent WR's he said "yeah, I thought we had one but he wimped out on me and signed with the Bears (implying Sanzenbacher)."

Latest article I've posted on brownsgab.com...thoughts? http://www.brownsgab.com/2011/07/27/wednesday-quick-hits/
So far the Browns have been quiet during post-lockout festivities. With teams required to spend at least 108 million, Cleveland’s front office certainly has the cash-flow it needs to be active during free agency. Whether or not they’ll do that remains to be seen. Keep in mind, teams can sign their own free agents but can not sign new players until Friday at 6PM. Here are the latest rumors surrounding the Browns and free agency.

- Many fans hoped for the likes of Paul Poslusnzy (Bills), Charles Johnson (Panthers) and Sidney Rice (Vikings) but that won’t be the case. Poslusnzy has agreed to a six year deal with the Jaguars, Johnson resigned with the Panthers long-term, and it appears as if the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks are bidding for Rice’s services. Ultimately, I think Rice ends up McNabb’s go-to guy in Minnesota.

- While it’s been widely reported that the Philadelphia Eagles are the leader for former Minnesota DE, Ray Edwards, that may not necessarily be the case. If you base predictions off of rumors, the Eagles are going to land every player in free agency. Look for the Browns to make a strong push for Edwards’ services, who could find himself in Cleveland’s starting line-up opposite of Jayme Mitchell (who is beloved by Cleveland’s front office).

- The Browns may lay claim to the most talented and youngest secondary in all of the NFL, but depth and a potential starter is certainly needed. Donte Whitner (Bills), and yes…Usama Young (Saints) are said to be on Cleveland’s radar. Whitner lacks coverage skills, which his more or less a necessity since Ward also lacks coverage capability. Eric Weddle has multiple teams interested in his talent and predicting where he may end up is nearly impossible. Usama Young was – at best – a standout in New Orleans’ special teams last season, but that hasn’t scared off Cleveland’s brass. Mary Kay Cabot (Cleveland Plain Dealer) has reported that the Browns and Young are in negotiations, and could be Cleveland’s first free agent signing – much to the dismay of the Dawg Pound. Ultimately I think the Browns land Whitner, who is familiar with Dick Jauron’s defense and fits the age-range the Browns seek. (under 30)

You think Mitchell would start over Sheard?

Everything that I've read - countless articles - Holmgren wanted to see Mitchell on the field last year but Mangini didn't play him. I've yet to question a move made by Holmgren and Co. so I have a hard time coming up with a reason that they'd trade away for a player that they wouldn't use, just to have him become a FA this year. With the lockout really hurting a few of the younger teams, I think inking Mitchell would be huge - not only for the defense early on, but to help bring Sheard along. Not saying he'll be inked in as the starter, but for the first few games at least. It's pure speculation though, camp hasn't even started. Fair?

Has Marion barber been signed? I would love him with hillis. So far I like the browns approach to free agency. All these teams are way over paying for players and heckert and co are sitting back waiting for there right guys

Barber hasn't been signed. I suppose there's an outside chance he could wind up in Cleveland, but like I said earlier - I haven't heard of any RBs being linked to the Browns. Doesn't mean there isn't possible players being looked at, just that it hasn't been publicized. Gotta believe, though, that Heckart and Holmgren have running backs on their radar. Hardesty's "I'm 100% healthy" gimmic isn't fooling anyone, at least until it's been proven.
