Which is why they need a stud MLB. If Taylor is as good as advertised they could get "Ray Lewis-like" (in his prime) production with he (Taylor) and Rubin protecting the MLB..

I understand what Heckert is saying, it is definitely much better to build a team through a draft, but FAs can't hurt. Don't give us this "we want to win now" bullshit if you aren't going to sign a few FAs. I don't think as Browns fans we are looking to sign 4 superstars, but come on at least get some guys who have NFL experience and can start NOW. The D Line needs work, and if they truly want to "win now," then they better sign a couple guys to help out. Two rookies is not going to get it done.

I still think they will sign some solid free agents but I think they will wait until the initial rush dies down. I like Ray Edwards but I don't "$70 million like" him. They will still add contributing pieces. I think we all got spoiled by Savage spending like a drunken sailor. See where that got us?

But there is a difference between then and now. We HAVE to spend money. Savage didn't have to, and probably shouldn't have.

Exactly, since he's been in Cleveland, Heckart has done a complete overhaul (almost) of the roster. Look at the talent on the roster 2-3 years ago compared to now. There's a youth movement, if you will, and while it may take some time to develop, the talent is certainly there. I think some Cleveland fans are expecting a little bit too much out of the "We want to win now" statement by the front office. Who doesn't want to win now? Ray Edwards may be as close to a superstar as we get in Cleveland out of these free agents. Like BR has said, a few 2nd Tier guys may end up on the roster, and that will at a minimum make us competitive this year, imo.

I could be wrong, but I don't think teams have to spend money just to reach the cap floor. I believe there is a penalty they can/would pay if they fail to reach it. I'll check into it and find out for you.
Regardless, would you rather see the team overpay for a player who's likely to be out of Cleveland in 1-2 years? Or spend on a lower-level guy, i.e. James Jones, Donte Whitner, who will provide a solid contribution throughout the duration of his contract?

As long as they spend money on starters. I don't want them signing FAs who couldn't make a starting spot on their old team.

I understand, but I think fans were expecting Heckart and Co. to go on a spending spree as soon as the lockout was lifted. That's not Heckart's style. In truth, if the Browns have to spend money - why not go ahead and lock-up Joe Thomas to a long term deal? He, of all the players out there asking for big money, deserves it more than most.

You are correct about the penalty.
But why would he be out of Cleveland in 1-2 years? (I'm asking because I don't know) Wouldn't he sign a multi year contract?

I'm not sure which player you're talking about. I'm just saying, take a guy like T.O. as an example (calm down people I said as an example). The guy has character flaws, he's productive but at the same time he's aging. Would you be satisfied if the Browns went and inked him to a - let's just say - 3 yr. $18 MIL with $8MIL guaranteed? Owens is a prime example of someone who could come in right now and make an impact for the Browns, but there isn't a lot of certainty when it comes to him? When you could bring in a guy like...Malcolm Floyd (Who I'm hearing may be on his way to Crapmore) for the same contract as you'd offer T.O. Clearly T.O. and Floyd are two different players, but there's more upside in offering Floyd as opposed to Owens. I was talking about Edwards. I wouldn't mind overpaying for him, because we have to spend money; as long as he would sign for 4+ years, which is what I was saying...why do you think we would only have him for 1-2 years? Am I missing something?

Edwards may have overpriced himself with the Eagles. If Babin is now in the mix either Philly thinks Edwards is too expensive or have a backup plan. He may end up the Browns' by default.
