Well he can't show anyone he can read an NFL defense until he's actually in the NFL, no college QB can. Let's get the elephant out of the corner now....most people don't see Newton as a high prospect because of his off the field problems and because he's black. If he were white, people would be calling him the next Roethlisberger because he shares many of Big Ben's traits (big guy, avoids tackles, strong arm, pretty good accuracy, mobile).
Here's what I know about Newton....he did only play essentially one year, but in that year he led his team to a national championship and performed well against the best competition in college football. I don't see how you can say he isn't better than Vince Young coming out of college from the perspective of him being an NFL prospect. He has a much stronger and more accurate arm. I'm not sure if he's the best fit for the Browns, but if I were a team in need of a quarterback....I would sure as hell take him over Gabbert and Mallett.
I also don't see him being another Young/Leaf/Russell because I think he has some mental toughness. The fact that he went through the whole season with everything in the media about him and his dad, possibly being suspended, etc. and was STILL able to take that team to a NC and perfect season......says a lot about his focus.
