Last player to hit 70 was Teemu Selanne in 92-93. 76 in 84 games.

I still can't fathom that Gretzky had 92 in the early 80s. Holy shit!

If Lemieux stays healthy (the guy had cancer for Christ's sake) and doesn't miss about almost five years worth of games, he shatters every record Gretzky set. Lemieux did it with an opposing players drapped all over him when he had the puck, you weren't allowed to even breathe on Gretzky and you got sent to the box or McSorley and Semenko would come out and kick your ass, Mario had no enforcer to protect him most of his career. If you watched both guys play it's not hard to see that Lemieux possesed greater raw skill, plus it took Pittsburgh years before they finally built a team around Mario, Gretzky didn't have that problem.

Way to go Pittsburgh homer! Lets do the math here - Mario is 1,100 points away from the Great Ones record - say he played all 82 games for 5 years he missed - 410 games - he would've had to AVERAGE 2.7 points per game!! Gretzky in his entire career didn't even average 2! Even with missing time, even with the different style of play, no way in hell Mario would've SHATTERED anything ANYTHING Gretzky did. To quote COA nice FAIL homer.

I'm not being a homer. Gretzky was an incredible smart for hockey, and knew what to do at the right time but, he could never take over games like Lemieux did. Lemieux was a physical force to be reckoned with. Grettzky never had to go through cancer, Irregular heart beats, pain in his back it the point he couldn't bend over to tie his skates and had to have teammates do it for him. Gretzky and Lemieux were equal during the latter part of the late 80's. During the 90's before his retirement, Gretzky tailed of in his production a bit. When he came back from retirement, he was able to get 76 points in only 40 games at the age of 33.

It took atleast 5-6 to get a great cast around him. While in Indy playing for the WHA before moving to Edmonton to play in the NHL Gretzky had a cast of players like Messier, Kurri, Anderson, Coffey, Fuhr, Lowe, and Moog.

OK based on injuries and hypothetical statements...not facts...I'm on record that Pavel Bure is the best goal scorer of all time. If not for knee injuries he would be the all time goal leader. Did you really say Gretzky never took over games? 2,587 points!!! He was the game, he didn't need to take games, he owned them. How about we start blaming crappy Pitt GMs for not building a team around Mario then? How about if the Gretzky trade to LA never happened? blah blah blah....homer.

Lemieux actually averaged 2 points a game until he came back a second time a ruined that stat. You can call me what ever you want but IMO, Lemieux had more talent than Gretzky and was just dealt a bad hand with health issues.

BTW, Gretzky initiated the LA trade......as you would put it, "nice fail"!

Yes, I believe he would have, he was that dominating of a force on the ice. He had speed, size and strength, plus that big wingspan that made it impossible for teams to defend.

You can throw all the IFs out there you want, but Gretzky is the GOAT and its really not debatable....and Lemieux is one of my favorite athletes EVER.

But I do agree that he was the better overall player from a physical standpoint. Not too many players come in his size and play with such finesse.
