Pittsburgh sports radio 93.7 The Fan and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette are reporting that current Miami (OH) HC Mike Haywood could be named Pitt's next HC as early as tomorrow. Sources at Miami and Pitt say he will be offered the job although Pitt brass have denied it.

The reaction from Pitt fans calling in on sports talk radio have been negative, they think they can land someone better. IMO, Haywood would be a very good hire for Pitt.

That's shocking.

They had an unbelievable turnaround this year... but it's still the MAC. I want to see more than a 1 year wonder before I would ever commit to someone from one of those schools. If they posted another 8+ win season next year then I would be sold.

Gotta strike while the iron is hot though I guess.

^^^^Haywood's a very good recruiter, he proved that when he was at ND, and he's more of a CEO type when it comes to running the team. I read that Haywood has players at Miami from something like 18 different states, all he has to do is corall Western PA and he can field a pretty good team every year.......JMHO.

Joe Schad is reporting it as a done deal. Terrible hire. Pitt will continue to disappoint year in and year out until they hire a winner.

Haywood may prove to be a great hire by Pitt. On the other side of the equation, the selection could be seen as a reach. He truly only had one good year at Miami U while his first two teams were dreadful. If you look at this from the perspective of a Pitt fan, you would see they are not pleased by this hire at all. This is the kind of pick that could cost the AD his job really fast if Haywood starts out poorly (don't forget, AD Steve Pederson is the same guy who fired Frank Solich at Nebraska).

It is possible Haywood will be a great coach at Pitt. However, I think it will take him a couple of years before Pitt contends again for the BE. Wannstadt had a top 25 recruiting class for 2011 before he was fired. After his termination, kids have de-committed left and right and their ranking has plummeted. Just today they lost a four star WR who is now looking towards WVU and UC. I have to wonder if Haywood has the juice to reel some of them back in and to continue land the bigger fish in the pond.

They were hoping to land a more established guy like Golden, Holgorsen (who goes to WVU to top it all off) or Leach.

a lot of pitt fans where hoping for teryl austin , a pitt grad and current d-coordinator at florida . but he took the d-coordinator job at texas

I was at Miami during the transition from Montgomery to Haywood and knew a couple football players.

Montgomery let the players walk all over him and do whatever they want. Haywood came in a worked them like dogs and demanded that they be better students and young men. He piss tested the whole team in his first meeting with them. He implemented 6 am workouts. He gained their respect and turned around the entire attitude of the team.

After his first season (1-11), he proved that he can recruit quality players from across the country. On the field, he put an emphasis on defense which hardly ever happens in the MAC.

I am not sure what the situation is with the team in Pittsburgh, but if it is anything like it was at Miami before he got there, I believe he will turn it around. He fits the personality of the city. At this point if you are Pitt, what do you have to lose? Take a chance on a young coach and see if you can strike gold.

^^ Good Hire. Treadwell was an assistant at Miami before so he is no stranger to Oxford. Thanks to three years he spent at UC as an assistant, he is also no stranger to some local HS coaches.

He also played WR at Miami, and was a captain his senior season. I haven't seen any confirmation, but I'd be happy with the hire; Treadwell did a nice job filling in for Dantonio this season. With Treadwell's Miami ties, hopefully he sticks around for more than a couple seasons.

Great hire for Miami.

Also great for OSU as Fickell was a rumored finalist.

Fickell needs to get a job as a head coach if he wishes to advance in the coaching ranks. If he stays at OSU as an assistant he might not get the job for another 10 years or more. If he goes to a MAC school and excels he lines him self up for many other coaching opportunities (including here in Columbus).

Agree. I normally would not mind losing Fickell, but since Hazell is already gone, I hope he stays. Losing both those guys in the same year would be a huge blow.

I would think he will resign over this. No way he keeps his job if he did this.
