What has Hughes ever done that makes him anything more than a #3?

Sabathia is an Ace, that is worse than BOTH Lee and Haladay. Hughes would be the 5th starter on that team, same with Pettitte. Hughes is getting by on a phenomenal first half of the year. Then teams realized he has a fastball and thats about it and he couldnt put anyone away when he had 2 strikes.

Burnett is a 5 starter on the Phils as well. He is nothing but a .500 pitcher, and his career record and numbers show it. He wont be over 5 era again, but he isnt going to be all that much better. He just isnt that great of a pitcher.

You ignore that other leagues have less parity than baseball. You also continue to ignore that every league has haves and have-nots.

I could keep going, but it is hopeless. You'll believe what you want to believe and you will ignore what you want to ignore.

You have literally posted nothing of substance through all of this back and forth. The main thing you say is "you can't compare baseball to the NBA" haha. That's been your main argument all along.

So you think that Werth signing with the Nats is a sign that the Yankees and Sawks can't sign anybody they want? That alone tells me all I need to know....


Werth's contract is one of the worst in baseball and something that neither Cashman or Epstein is stupid enough to do, only a terrible team like the Nats throws too much money at mediocre players.

Cliff Lee is the first player I've seen the Sox or Yanks truly want that they couldn't get, and he's the exception not the rule.

Yeah, that's my point. Any team can sign anybody they want. Sure they may have to overpay, but they still have that opportunity. Whether or not they choose to is up to them

No, they can't.

PRIME free agents only go to teams with top 4 payrolls, and that now includes the Phillies.

Since when does 4 teams=30 teams???? This must be a new development.


Name me the last great free agent to go to a team outside of a top 4 payroll (at the time) team. And Jayson Werth is far from great.

Sure they can. There is no salary cap. If they want to outspend the Yankees and Sox they can. But they don't. Teams are more interested in pocketing the loose change. I have no problem with a player playing where he "wants" to play.

I think both sides of this argument are somewhat correct. The Indians used to have a high payroll, but have since changed their philosophy. They are more concerned now with profiting, and they do that by cutting payroll and collecting the revenue sharing. If they chose to, which they could, they could compete with the others.

Sure the Yankees and Red Sox bring in the most revenue therefore can spend more. But in baseballs current system, the small market teams profit more by collecting from the revenue sharing.

I know Joe Mauer wasn't a free agent, but the Twins anted up, and most didn't expect that from them.

But yes, in the current system, the larger market teams have a big advantage because of the revenue they bring in. It's basic economics.

I think Jordo has some valid points. I for one, wouldn't be opposed to a salary cap being instituted in baseball, but I also don't think its broken with the current system. I mean the fact of the matter is you are always going to have teams that are contenders every year and those that suck in all sports. Think of all the teams not named the Red Sox/Yankees that don't do very much yet still spend a ton of money. You don't hear anyone complaining about the Mets or the Cubs. And like Jordo said, there are the haves and the have nots in all sports. I know everyone is busting his balls for providing examples involving the NBA, but the fact of the matter is, the NBA has a salary cap and we still see the big market teams routinely being competitive. The Lakers and Celtics are contenders every year and have absolutely no problems attracting big time talent. Even though the NFL prides itself on parity, there are still teams that suck every year. While I think there are some merits to baseball having a salary cap I don't think that they absolutely need one. The sport is doing fine.
