Not saying you're wrong, but, I find it interesting how you dismiss Joe Biden as someone who must not be smart because of his supposed lack of a good education while scoffing at the idea that BHO has any level of superior intelligence despite his supposed good education, one perhaps that might have earned Joe Biden more respect in your eyes? 1. Misspelling/misspeaking is a part of life. I consider myself to (in real life) be pretty smart. So do my friends. I know from experience that when I publicly speak, I really fucking struggle. I think it's sad that, whether it be Bush Jr., Obama, Palin, whoever...that verbal gaffes are brought out as "significant". Makes one think that people care more about style over substance in politicians. You know, why two of our most-talked about ones are an attractive milf and a charismatic minority. Who cares what anyone brings to the table, let's focus on superficial crap. If our country is going down the crapper...it's not because of the "left" or the "right", it's because we've turned into this instant-gratification society full of groups who insist they're "right" and opposing groups are "wrong", thinks compromise is for pussies and believes that the loudest yelling voice should prevail.

2. I'd put Palin-hate and Obama-hate on the same level. A lot of people at least verbally hate Palin because she's a woman with power. Just like a lot of people use Obama's minority status as a reason to bash him ("birth certificate" "hate church" "muslim"...the stuff some have brought up for what feels like an eternity). Politics is the definition of a "good ol' boys club". Both of those two are out of the traditional mold. One is a white FEMALE, the other is a NON-WHITE male. You don't have to go back that far in our history to find a time where one would be a slave and the other might as well be, as the Interwebz "stay in the kitchen" deal would be a reality of life.

3. You could say the same about the love for either. Minorities came out in droves to vote for Obama, as opposed to guys like Kerrey or Gore. On the other hand, I remember on the old Huddle, the conservative club tended to change their avatars to Palin-centric ones (a few even included McCain...you know, the actual dude who was the president candidate) before the last election. It really came off as this "our party has a good-looking woman running on the ticket" sort of thing, which sends things back to the first point, where people care more about superficial stuff than actual reality.

Suffice it to say, that someone's intelligence increases in direct proportion to their political alignment with your views.


I think the posts here need to be viewed within the context of the thread starter's original post, where he threw down the gauntlet on Palin's misspeak.

Heretic, you tick off some very good points in your post.
However, there's just one little thing I'd like to point out. The "hate church" comment cannot be describes as anything but accurate. For somebody to choose to attend a church like that for TWENTY years says an awful lot about them. And none of it is any good. But, it does say one thing - that for 20 years, there had to have been profound elements in what was being preached that was acceptable and practiced, in order to continue going.

Looking back at my post describing what I view as idiotic; color, age, or financial status wasn't mentioned or insinuated. Or anything like it. I think it would be interesting to see if somebody DIDN'T find those instances idiotic.

Fact is: I don't hate Obama. However, I DESPISE just about everything he wants to do and stands for. As for the man, personally, he doesn't bother me one way or another.

As for Palin: I think a great deal of the hatred for her comes from people who believe that political women should always be liberal, because liberals are the one who have pushed things like affirmative action. She should be a member of that group beholden to the folks who "sacrificed" to make a better world for women and minorities. I probably should have put "better" in parenthesis, too.

I think another large part of the hatred toward Palin comes from this same group that is threatened by her overt religious nature, and the conservative things she believes in (anti abortion, not pro gay in the way they are, etc.)

I don't believe for one second it comes mainly from her gender and having power. I don't see most liberals (and they are the ones who despise her most) being threatened on any level by a women with power. The simply don't like her beliefs (as noted) and call her dumb at least in part, because of those beliefs (people who don't believe in abortion, sex education for elementary students, and gay rights are neanderthals, don't you know).

Well, yeah, a lot of the liberals I know dislike Palin for her ideology (essentially along the lines of what p-town was saying like, way back in this thread). In fact, no one I personally know has ever used her gender as an excuse to hate on her. But on this site and other places, more people than Belly have used stupid reasons to try to discredit Obama. Just like more people than Ty/Gibby/etc. have used stupid reasons to discredit Palin. Maybe, due to the lateness of the hour, my brain was too fuzzy to necessarily make my overall point clear (or I just lost track of it), but the gist of what I was trying to say is that if you're looking to discredit someone, using a random verbal gaffe or gender or whatnot as a focal point is just as stupid as using race or focusing on things like the citizenship hoax.

Upon reading what I wrote, I did pretty much lose track of what I was saying, though. What I was trying to get at with the "verbally hate because" was more along the lines of that because a lot of people dislike someone's politics, they look to attack on anything, regardless of how off-topic it is. Which leads to lowest-common-denominator comments like the originator of this thread or Belly's repeated "show us proof of citizenship" comments LONG after those original allegations became a non-factor. Because, let's face it, not everyone is necessarily great at debating issues and such...but it's pretty easy for anyone to jump on non-factors and blow them out of proportion.

Between now and November, 2012, a lot can happen to dramatically raise her profile and make her a viable candidate.

Precisely. Just look at her profile now, compared to a year ago when she was completely written off after resigning as governor. I don't think she'll be POTUS, (or even the nominee for that matter) but to think she won't be a serious playa is silly.

In fairness, it has yet to be determined if she is a "viable" candidate or not. She has continued to close the gap with Bam in every poll of that nature that has been released. We won't know if she's "viable" for at least another year...you're letting your dislike for her cloud your judgment.
