Lol, some of the kids where I teach (and adults, for that matter) are genuinely fearful of anyone who isn't white. It is a very white area and some of them don't get out much. They seem to believe every stereotype they have ever heard. Its pretty sad.

I have a roommate who is blatantly racist and it is disgusting. Cannot wait to not live with him.

I had a Latin teacher who once said, to begin the class freshman year, "Listen I don't care if you're white, black, purple, blue, gay, or all of the above...you're freshmen, and thus I hate you all the same." He had a pretty solid and comical point.

In my opinion, anyone who is truly a champion for racial equality shouldn't care about race at all. You are your own person. That means all of that affirmative action shit is bogus. It isn't reverse racism, it is just racism.

Want to know why white people often have a fear of other races? Google "thug" and see the images. That's what people see. Now let me say I don't know one person who is afraid of these people:

But I know plenty of people who fear this look:

The big difference is that one of those three races has a culture that unfortunately promotes that "I'm tough. Respect me." look brought about by the gross lacking of male father figures. I will catch plenty of flack for this, but I think a lot of contemporary racism is created the respective race.

To be completely honest with you all three of those races have members that promote the "I'm tough. Respect me." look.

KKK/Skinheads=Any black gang=Any asian gang=Any Mexican gang.

They're all the same pathetic pieces of cowardice.

No I completely agree. The difference, in my opinion, is not necessarily gangs but just the popular look walking down the street. Granted, there will always be racism for the idiots of society, but I don't think the majority of people labeled as racists are indeed racists. I'm just as fearful of a white dude walking down the street late at night in huge baggy jean shorts and a wife beater with 2 gold chains and a t-shirt over his shoulder as I am someone of any race. But in my experience, suburban America doesn't dress like that, urban areas tend to. Suburbanites fear the look, not the race. Show me one black dude walking around in Hollister striking fear into the eyes of whites everywhere, and you can prove me wrong.

I used to coach in poorest school district in Toledo, Libbey High, and my kids would call me "secret millionaire" because they thought anyone who wore J. Crew and Banana Republic around had to be loaded, regardless of the fact that I drove a 2000 Honda Civic to school everyday. :) The difference is socioeconomic, and people have established fears with those not in their tax bracket in my opinion due to how they dress. I just don't think "racial inferiority" is prevalent these days with anyone with half of a brain.

That said, the kids were right on the money (pun intended). I coached there primarily because I went to private schools (Maumee Valley, St. Francis, Cardinal Stritch...hence the avatar name) and thought that since I'm getting into a very political City & Regional Planning program it would behoove me to get in touch with the real world. I learned more from my players about life than they could ever have hoped to have learned from me about football and throwing shot/discus. "secret millionaire" hahaha

There is an exception to every rule buster. But T.O. in that picture is 1) odd, and 2) an example of a dude whose clothing isn't offensive.

People who are "afraid" of someone based on what they wear are just as fucking stupid for people who are "afraid" of someone because theyre a different race

Tattoos and baggy clothing doesnt=gangster. But suburbia sure thinks so. Smh

Actually, a LOT of that look anymore is simply perpetuated by the cultural "coolness" of it.

Most of the kids I work with dress similarly, but the clothing and the attitude have nothing in common with each other, as the kids I work with are very respectful, and often have fathers who make a decent living.

That is almost precisely my point. For every white guy you see walking around like that in the suburbs, there are ten who think he's a douchebag. It simply isn't that "cool" to dress "like a thug" in suburbia. It's mostly a phase in my experience.

I don't know exactly what it is to put my finger to it, but people used to tell me there were race problems in my high school, particularly between blacks and somalis, tcarrier and crosby_show could probably harp more on this point.

Since I go to college with a pretty good mix of blacks and asians now, it doesn't seem to phase me. Most of them are generally good people who are working hard studying to make a good life for themselves. Hell, some of them are too afraid to screw up because its their first time anyone in their family has gone to college. Some of them dress in the "I'm tough respect me" mold, but it doesnt' phase me.

I think alot has to with the fact that some kids arent exposed to other races. I coach at a mostly to damn near all white school and when we play the teams from Lima such as North South and West the kids are almost like deer in headlights and don't know how to handle the loud and semi hostile crowd. For the most part when they get to know someone of different race they are fine. I think its mostly just not being exposed and realizing that people are people.
Why do other races feel like white people are afraid? Why can't people be apprehensive about other races because of no interaction or bad experiences as oppose to being afraid? Im not afraid of any race...I hate everyone.
