Every holiday has a meaning to it, and Christmas is ONLY here because of Jesus' birth.
So what do any of the holiday events you listed have to do with Jesus birth? Is the tree for Jesus? Or the sale?

I'm not sure why your panties are all in a bunch over this.

Doesn't matter to me how anyone says it..whenever anyone says "Happy Holidays" towards me..I just reply with a "Merry Christmas". They can say whatever they want..as will I.

Really?
The ones that DON'T believe in things that don't exist are the idiots?

From a marketing perspective, of course they are going to use a catch-all term. Why would they want to produce more ads containing each of the names of the multiple holidays in this time? Easier to use the broad term that covers whatever floats your boat. They use the term "holidays" because they are referring to multiple "holidays"... what a concept.

I have no problem with Chirstmas being used though. I observe it because it's recognized as an official holiday in this country, not for any religious reason. It's all secular here.

My guess is that atheists are idiots because they don't subscribe to the same faith-based (ie: no actual physical proof) belief that this person does and he/she isn't mature enough to accept things like other people not completely siding with how he/she feels.

At least that's what I'm getting from his "BLAHBLAHBLAHYOU'REANIDIOTIFYOU DISAGREEBLAHBLAHJESUSBLAH!!!!" line of debate.

The only times I've ever been annoyed with "Happy Holidays":

1) A few years back, the Columbus Dispatch had that as the banner headline on December 25. Apparently Proclamation Day (an Australian holiday) was being observed here but no one knew it.

2) When I had some growing up to do.

Great. Another "War on Christmas" thread.

By proclaiming "YES, atheists are idiots!!!!!", I know all I need to know about the OP's worldview.

NOBODY is stopping ANYBODY from celebrating Christmas in this country. It's not happening. Anyone who thinks that Christmas is really in danger has issues. Not everyone feels the need to go around and shove Christmas down people's throats...

"War on Christmas" people: get over yourselves. Accept that there are other faiths and belief systems in the world. Go celebrate your Christmas and they can go celebrate their holiday, whatever that might be. Live and let live.

That being said, Merry Christmas AND Happy Holidays to everyone!

cats gone wild wrote: Im so sick and tired of seeing on t.v., news papers, sales adds, "holiday sale, holiday lights, holiday tree, holiday concert"................etc. I thought this would slow down after Thanksgiving but it hasnt. Is it so hard, or against the law to say the word Christmas anymore? If you dont like the word Christmas.....then quit buying presents and decorating for it. If you are offended by the word Christmas, then I feel sorry for ya. Every holiday has a meaning to it, and Christmas is ONLY here because of Jesus' birth. If you say happy holidays to me in a store, I will say Merry Christmas to you. Bash me if you want, but in the past five years this country has made me sick over a small percentage of people who dont like something.

end rant/
Wrong. But nice try. People celebrating the winter solstice predates Christianity by a few thousand years. Notice how every religion has an important holiday in December? Hence the "Happy Holidays". No one is gonna arrest you if you say Merry Christmas to someone who says Happy Holidays to you, nor will you be proving a point.

If someone said Happy Hanukkah to me, I'd say Happy Hanukkah back to them. If they say Merry Christmas, I say the same.

Capitalism strikes again! Just like people who bitch about stores putting everything in Spanish AND English, you can blame capitalism. Companies will squeeze every last dime out of every last consumer, especially if it means doing something so easy like saying 'Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". So your beef is with the idea of capitalism, not with anything else.

Oh and whats with people getting so angry about stuff having to do with celebrating and giving and sharing good times with family and friends?
