I think the mistake or problem here is being labeled marxist, socialist, neocon, etc. is that the people who like to hang these labels are blanket naming.

It's a bastardy that gets labeled as absolute. I'm not so sure that's a good practice to get into. On the other hand, it IS hard to differentiate when people project several distinct characteristics, to NOT label them as such. So I think that, especially politicians, if you have certain views, own them. Sooner or later it will come out, anyway; by either your words or actions.
This applies to teachers/professors also. I'm not a teacher, but I would imagine that, for example, if I were teaching .... history, it would be hard if not impossible to keep every single personal view out of it, therefore slanting how you are projecting.
Same for politicians. For politicians, it's especially hard to stifle your personal feelings in the age of video and internetz. Folks are just learning more and more about them.

It just is what it is.
