So they dumped their OOC schedule and are playing teams they can beat and dominate. The average 15 year old considering going out for the team doesn't really think about strenghts of schedules. He just sees that final record is 6-4, 7-3. Now all that work doesn't seem so bad. Look for numbers to go up for them. Once that happens they will probably start increasing the quality of their ooc opponents. For example, maybe next year drop FFG and get a Belpre.
That's how I'd build a program anyway. It's a slow process, and hopefully for the people who likes football in Beverly they will let Huck do his job.
Agree on most points, except Belpre was like 0-10 last year (does that really increase the quality?). I never really thought about it until now, but Fort Frye used to play all the local teams like Warren, Belpre, Morgan. Seems like they didn't always fare so well but that is just off the top of my head. Those were probably good for the gate, but going back to what you said.....if you aren't going to play for a state title, you might as well play to win as much as possible and have your kids feeling good about the team/school.
Waterford has done that within the last 15 years (after being one of the worst programs in the country) and it has just changed the whole attitude of the school and community. A few years ago they went 9-1 and missed the playoffs, but would you rather have 9-1 and miss the playoffs or 1-9 and miss the playoffs while getting beat 40-0 on a regular basis?
Scheduling creampuffs is okay, but the only knock I have on the way FF is doing it is that half of their schedule is D-VI. A couple of those are league games, plus the rivalry game with Waterford - but maybe they could find some crappy D-V schools to beat on instead of Green and Rosecrans (back to Belpre)?
