It's sort of Kentucky-related, but FIU star recruit Dominique Ferguson has been ruled ineligible. A former UK commit under Gillispie, committed to Isiash Thomas after Calipari took over and he decommited from UK.

This is the second Gillispie recruit, and the two who were the "prizes" of his 2010 class, Dominique Ferguson (FIU) and K.C. Ross-Miller (LSU) have both been ruled ineligible by the NCAA in the last few days.

And I haven't for one second said he is or has cheated at UK. Obviously, nothing concrete has surfaced in that area. And he may not "need" to at UK either. The guy can recruit, no question. And obviously, UK basketball recruits as well. Together, thats a lethel combo as far as recruiting goes.
That being said, as I have mentioned before....I think Cal gets more pub then any coach that has ever walked the sidelines WITHOUT a title. He is slick and smooth in front of the camera and along with his recruiting, he gets his media attention. I think he is highly overrated as a "coach" as well. He has had as much talent as anyone in the country over the past 5/6yrs and has one "vacated" final four to show for it.
Maybe talent wins over at some point. But as we saw vs WVU, when the other team is close or equal in talent....Cal coaching comes into the mix and is questionable at best at times.

NO matter what happens, my personal opinion of Cal wont' change based on what happened at UMass and Memphis. Its nothing against UK basketball at all. I am a big college basketball fan and have no hatred or jealousy towards any program.
I am old school and have no like for those who have or do cheat. I was one of the few Jim O'Brien fans...until we all found out what was going on. I turned on him in a second as he embarressed OSU. I would do the same if Matta ever get caughts cheating while at OSU.
I hope for UK and their fans...it doesn't happen. But again, I would not be in the least surprised if something does surface in the near future. He has yet to have his hands slapped directly....and that may not be a good thing for UK.
We'll watch, wait and see.

Its right there. So, in regards to your "its not a big deal". It most certainly is if it causes a player to inelgible. And again, a coach coming off one vacated final four, should certainly KNOW what is a major violation or not.

Wow, a couple of posts ago I mentioned DeAndre Daniels, a possible recruit from the 2011 class that de-committed from Texas. It appears he may be trying to re-classify to 2010, and Kentucky may indeed be the favorite for him. There are still a few hoops to get through, but this would be the equivalent of adding another top 5-10 incoming player to this year's class. He is a little more highly regarded (relative to class) than Terrence Jones was for 2010, and given that UK has 2 scholarships still unfilled, he could be a great piece to add to the interior depth.

Whether he does re-classify to 2010 or stays in the 2011 class, it sounds as if Calipari and UK are going to be right there, if not the favorites to land Daniels either way.

My dad told me this this morning, as I was gone yesterday evening. Good pickup, which will make 4 5 *'s for 2011 already. My dad was happy Cal finally recruited a white kid. From the picture i saw, he looks like John Hood but taller.

They have basically said for a long time that we won't know the Kanter ruling until the season gets near. I'm not even sure the NCAA has looked at it yet...

Based on what I have read, I think its a done deal. Doesn't look like UK did very good research on this. Of maybe they did.....

This is another case where this has been an issue since before Kanter even came to Kentucky. My guess is he will play at some point, but will definitely miss some time. I don't see the NCAA ruling him ineligible for the entire year.

It isn't, but lets also look at the other side.

Kentucky signed Kanter knowing there might be an issue. They have nothing to lose. If he's eligible, great, if not, oh well.

However, there is a definite agenda on the other side to prevent Kanter from playing in the United States, becoming a household name and furthering his career in basketball outside of Turkey. There have been many instances in the past where Turkey has tried to make it as difficult as possible for these guys to thrive elsewhere. This could definitely be viewed as stopping precedent for other players to jump as well.

Then there is the issue about Kanter's family. According to what they said when Enes was being recruited, they were well-aware of NCAA rules and had planned on Enes attending college in the USA before going pro. His family also isn't hurting for money which will be another argument made on whether he indeed was paid or not. Now, if it was all a show and the family did indeed take money, it won't be tough to prove and he will be ruled ineligible or at least suspended.

However, I don't see how we can really blame UK here. They knew there might be issues, but it wasn't something that was in their control so they might as well sign Kanter and take the chance he's eligible. If not, so be it, but I'd venture to say that many, many other schools would've recruited Kanter even if it was only 50/50 that he would be eligible.

Better look up the rule book. Once you have been paid, your considered a professional, thus your completely ineligible to play college ball. Pretty black and white. Not only was he paid 100K, his family was also taken care of, from the sounds of it.
If this information is all accurate, I see no way that Kanter will ever sniff a college floor.

Azu, I agree with you. I don't blame Calipari for recruiting guys like Rose and other guys with questionable histories like Wall, but I certainly understand that it will bring on skepticism.

Regarding this situation, I don't think any skepticism or criticism of Calipari is fair, because I'm sure he understand the problems facing all the guys from overseas that try to qualify for NCAA ball.

I have confidence the NCAA will get this taken care of before the season, rather than dragging it out.

"Paid" isn't just clear-cut. There are obviously many different circumstances where many players have received payments and have still played. As I said, this was an issue while Kanter was being recruited, so it's not like things weren't out in the open from the get go. Had it been clear-cut that he would be ineligible, I doubt Kanter would've tried to attend college and anyone would have really relied on him to ever suit up. Kentucky has been fairly certain he would be eligible since back then, before the Nike Hoops Summit in-which he really had his coming out party to the country and really vaulted him into the possible #1 overall pick in next year's draft.

That's all you can ask if you are Kentucky or Calipari. Either rule him eligible or rule him ineligible. If he can't play, he can't play. That's fine. However, don't let it drag out all season or even rule him eligible and then try to declare him ineligible after he suits up for UK.
