I'll give you a perfect example.

Mogadore has open enrollment with Field and Springfield, two bordering districts (but do not with Ellet or Tallmadge).

Mogadore can only accept a couple kids per grade level due to school/class size and then they are turning kids away. Mogadore, due to their class sizes and physical school size, they can only realistically "fit" 60 kids per grade level. If they have more than 60 than they accept zero open enrollment kids for that grade level (kids are getting turned away from Springfield left and right as its a school system that is really in trouble right now).

I kids are accepted based on their academic and behavior record from their previous school. Not only that, but to be 100% honest, homes are for sale/rent all over Mogadore right now with the economy where its at, if a parent wants their kid to go there they do not have to use open enrollment.


Plus, Field has had a darn good football team in recent years, so kids aren't flocking from Field to Mogadore for football.

I would say that since Mogadore first had open enrollment in the mid 90s (about 15 years) I would bet that maybe 30-35 kids (in 15+ years) have played HS football at Mogadore that were open enroll students (I was one of them by the way in the 90s). Of those players, I bet less than 10 even made all league (and typically Mogadore places a ton of kids on all league) and zero of the open enroll kids have been all state.

Mogadore's "star" players over the last 15 years, from Dennis Robbins, Chuck Moore, John Raddish, Tommy Lee, Cody Destro, Charlie Molnar, Mike Wagner, etc have all been (unless I'm losing my mind) Mogadore kids who grew up in Mogadore and/or lived in Mogadore.

I do not doubt what you are stating is true (your one of the most respected posters and I have no reason to doubt you), but other times such as what is happening with Perkins open enrollment effecting Sandusky and SMCC is quite the opposite. SMCC will soon not have football and Sandusky is a shell of it's former self. Sometimes, open enrollment is not much different than private.

We pulled our son out of Massillon schools and put him into neighboring Perry School District. Nothing against Massillon, just a personal preference. Their education 'standards' weren't really up to what we were looking for. The way Perry works is, first come, first serve. They have a certain amount of kids per school that they will accept. All in all, most school districts don't use open enrollment to benefit in sports. I'm not saying that NONE don't do it, but just b/c you got a handful of schools that abuse the privilege, doesn't mean you shouldn't have the policy. Most districts that I'm aware of use jmogs example, choosing by behavior and academic pasts. While others also do a first come, first serve.

Mogadore considers both academics, behavior, and first come first serve for open enrollment. They don't have limits overall for the school system, they have limits on each grade level. It is a different limit per grade level too, since the resident student level in each grade level is different.

Example-If 55 1st graders and 57 2nd graders live in Mogadore and their "cap" per grade level was say 60 (not sure what the cap is). They would only allow 5 1st grade and 3 2nd grade open enrollment students.

I would say that right now, most of Mogadore's open enrollment students are from Springfield since that district is having major financial and cutback problems and has been for years (weel before the economic crisis).

Back to the original topic... Other than Marion Local, who should be the top D6 schools this season?

You make some valid points. However, keep in mind that NC doesn't recruit. (I wish they did.) The past few years it's seemed like more kids have transferred from Newark and Heath to Licking Valley. I will say this though. If NC doesn't make the playoffs with the talent that it has this season, then there needs to be a coaching change.

I agree, the non conf schedule should give us more points this year.
