My last Cincy apartment was in Oakley, walking distance to Rookwood, and was $475/month with heat included. It was definitely not a hole, and wasn't that small. I loved living over there as it was pretty centrally located, and I never had any serious issues with personal safety. My car did get broken into, but that may have been because I forgot to remove my Ipod and GPS from view.

I also spent time in Corryville (near UC) and Avondale, both while I worked at the zoo. I liked Corryville as well because it was easy to walk to quite a few places. I lived in a first floor apartment, was out at night alone all the time, and never had any issues. For Avondale, I'll just say somehow I never got shot :)

I would recommend Oakely and Hyde Park. I also looked at a few places in Mt. Lookout, and have been to quite a few nice place across the river in Covington and Bellevue. I'd stay away from O'Bryonville, as I heard only total douchetards live there. The key I found was staying out of the big apartment buildings. Outside of one place, all my apartments were in houses or 4-ish unit buildings. My apartment in Oakley was right above a wine store. It just took a whole lot of leg work, and a little luck. I'm spacing out on the agency I rented thrugh at the moment, but I'll dig out my old check register when I get the chance.

I dont know where you live now, but do you pay attention still to how many people are getting shot in Avondale? A guy tried to steal a 3 year old at a fast food place a day ago lol. Everything is going nuts.

Oh I'm well aware. I was in that 'hood for 2 years as I worked at the Zoo, and in the time I lived across the street (5 or so months) there were at least a dozen shootings in a 4 block radius, 5 of which I actually heard. I wouldn't recommend it for most people. I'm a little nutty though :)

Corner of Edwards and Markbreit?

My fiancee lived in a one bedroom apartment that was absolutely awesome right down the road from there on Edroy. At the time...she was paying like $500/month and had a garage and heat included. That was a few years ago...so I'm sure the price has gone up since then. But the apartments were very clean and well taken care of. And the area is easy access to the highway and walking distance to restaurants/bars. Plus, to get an apartment with a garage is absolutely awesome!

*EDIT* Found the website...looks like those apartments are up to $595 which is still a ridiculous deal for free heat/water and a garage.

apartment rent has gone down over the last few years just like housing, even in the good neighborhoods. You can negotiate with landlords now more than ever.

Yep, that's the one! I was happy to have off street parking, but no garage. I did have a sweet balcony, though. It was technically a 1 bed, but there was a "dining room" that could be closed off so I turned it into a 2nd bedroom. I loved that area!

James Rd area? ...better take that $500 and buy a Kevlar Vest.

Seriously dude you ain't gonna find any young - happenin' places within 20 min. that rent for $500 / mo. in C-bus. Maybe Reynoldsburg or low-end of Gahanna but neither of them would be considered "young".

I don't know if that is necessarily true. I think in the desirable areas, which we are talking about, they have consistently went up. It's harder for people to buy houses and there is a percentage of the population that has lost their houses, so that makes a larger market of renters.
